Physicist-errant. Quite mad, mostly honest.

Vita brevis, vive magne.
I'm out. Cancelable res, thank goodness, and had been holding off registration just in case.
We are closely following the operations ongoing in New Orleans and will continue to update this page as we have more information. You can currently find some additional guidance at the links at the bottom; we will update with more as we have it. www.agu.org/agu25-neworl...

Have you listened to this yet? If not, highly recommend for next road trip or whenever…

A funny thing happened on the way to lowering egg prices...

Awaiting the order to change that pesky Greek pi to a more convenient, all-American number like, oh, don't know...3? 4? 10? What number would make us greatest? 11? 42?

Sigh.

That & MLK's 'I Have a Dream' speech on continuous play.

So lovely--one imagines a wave of sudden inspiration across human knitting/crocheting/spinning communities.
This is the mystery spider egg sac covered with a veil of pink silk that was determined to be woven by a Poltys based on several rounds of discussion on iNaturalist and Twitter.

Thanks to @arachnonaut.bsky.social for the lead!

Taking a pause on lantern bugs. Not sure what's next so here's a pleasing fungus beetle (why pleasing?) from the Peruvian Amazon. It's blue, so enjoy it!

Probably Cypherotylus debauvei, previously under the genus Gibbifer.

This branch defies basic engineering principles as we humans understand them.

Tidy rows of clouds, though not so orderly as to seem unreal.

But sometimes one runs across a random Floridian & there's Flipturn, poetry, Markov chains. Then it's "more like this, pleaze". Happy 2025! Btw 🥰.
Does the “less like this” button on Bluesky actually do anything? I cannot escape engagement-bait half-ai libpost gotchas 😭 happy new year btw

And now I know SMHM=Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse! Unless the exam to get a Swiss Master's in Hospitality Management includes an aquatic component...? And I thought physics comps were tough.
Hey #hydrology folks! Seeking recommendations for in situ saline water flow/velocity monitoring equipment. Right now looks like Badger Meter is most common for research. I would appreciate any insights folks have about brands to favor or avoid.

Including a SMHM doing hydro stuff for visibility.

The best SNL sketch in the history of SNL. Honestly, so good it could be Monty Python. Or Clarke & Dawe. I still turn to the "Front Fell Off" for comfort in dark times: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5q...

🫣“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” —Mark Twain
Feels like this old video captures the current political mood, yet again 🫠

CW: not really work appropriate video. Also makes less sense if you don't know it's a parody of a popular pop music video.

OMG. The paradigm shift is upon us.
The randomness of quantum mechanics is just something to stop the universe getting stuck. #YouHeardItHereFirst

Almost enough for a Taylor Swift concert…
Wow! 🌍 Over 30,000 attendees from around the globe joined us in Washington, D.C., and online to explore What’s Next for Science at #AGU24.

THANK YOU for an incredible week of collaboration and discovery! 🤝✨

We can’t wait to see you next year at #AGU25 in New Orleans! 🚀🌆

One wakes up considering paradigm shifts. A train of thought that chugs, inevitably, to Einstein’s wire-fox terrier, Chico:

@stevenjgibbons.bsky.social Recall you’re an aficionado of interesting vocals—check out Flipturn’s ‘August’, starting about 32:09. Closing improv is pretty special—the kid’s got pipes 😍: m.youtube.com/watch?v=zTF5...

Well, "Bluesky" is a prettier name than "X's Proverbial Spam Folder"...
There are moral and ideological cases for leaving X, of course, but you don't even need them: the old platform is just *gone* and has been for a long time nymag.com/intelligence...

Omg. Clouds of misinformation *already* creeping across the sunny sky prompting yet another anguished navel-glance: Why am I here? Is a Twitter—>X style doom-cycle *inevitable*? Was Jack Dorsey right? Do we care? This & more in ‘As the Butterfly Flaps’. Stay tuned! (Oh, & hi, Cian 🤗👋!)
This is not a scientifically accurate volcano. 🌋 😆
