Sorting through some old photos I found this, which I am always as startled to see as I was when we actually saw it.

(On the way to the Dursey Island cable car in Co Cork. I don't know if it's still there. Let's hope not.)
It's a little fella made from concrete. He's sitting on a bench and has three very damaged dogs (?) with him. Whoever painted this ensemble only had access to red paint and white paint. He has patched trousers and a beard. His coat is pink, his boots and hat and trousers and cheeks are red. The biggest dog has red eyebrows, all three dogs have red paws. It's a very grey damp day.

Cashelkeelty East stone circle, nr #Lauragh #CountyKerry #RepublicofIreland (2008)

It's quite a climb up here, through the dark damp woods, but well worth it.

A fine autumn day. This is a five-stone circle (the stones are not large, maybe knee to waist height) with a stone row adjacent, the large stone in the photo (about 2.5m) is part of the row. The views are stunning, across to Killmakilloge Harbour and Knockatee mountain. There's another circle about 70m away, and the mediæval road from Kenmare to Castletownberehaven can be seen to the north.

I just did a bit more research, they were called Gorge Cafes I think - the one in Reading is in fact still there. Here's a pic from Trip Advisor showing the fake cave ceiling!

The jibs are still set, as is the main sail and foremast topsail. The hull is fully sunk. Sea state is slight. Mildred was on voyage from Newport to London with a cargo of basic slag when it ran around in dense fog at midnight on 6 April 1912."

An ‘elf on the shelf’ branded erasable message board, you know, where you write on the surface with a stylus and pull the tab thing to erase it so you can write another message. Very low tech, seemed like magic in the 70s. Anyway, someone (a teenager I’m guessing) has written ’hello you cunt!’ on it. Classic.

You can't enter the tomb, this was taken through the roofbox, it's quite awkward. Also Knockmany Hill is quite steep in places.

when I was young my dad told me that knee socks had been a fashion thing in the mid-sixties and quite attractive. I thought this was a weird concept. Some time later I saw pics from this photo session and everything made sense.
It's 1964. It's B&W. It's Marianne Faithfull in a pub - a shiny London gin palace I assume, with button-backed dralon banquettes and a massive ashtray on the table - in a frock with knee socks and strappy shoes.

Look, it's Prunella Scales in Hobson's Choice in 1954.

I absolutely adore Soft Cell and should make more effort with his solo work. I loved the suff he did as The Grid.

We saw Soft Cell several times in recent years - here's a terrible pic from when they did the whole of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret which was marvellous.

Archie had hyperthyroidism, but the medicated food they put him on sorted it out. (Supportive pic of Archie in case that helps.)

@claudiusme.bsky.social and I went to see the Andy Warhol exhibition at Woking’s Lightbox yesterday and were rather delighted by this offering in the café. We didn’t try it though, we had pastéis de nata. (Exhibition was excellent btw.)
A framed description of the ‘Warhol Guest Product’ which is a ‘cornflake jam tart’. There’s a pic of said tart and a Warhol silver fright wig self-portrait to ensure all is clear. Some text explains that Andy loved cornflakes and he also loved jam, hence the delicacy. This is all backed with a repeated Campbell’s Soup image. In front of the framed there are four examples of the cornflake jam tarts, they’re quite large. £2:65 each

The sky is grey, the grass is green, Ollie is wearing his waterproof jacket. The stone is behind him, leaning backwards, about ten feet tall and covered in lichen. The ogham script is on the edge facing the camera but it's tricky to see. "Macalister's revised reading (1945, 226-7) of this is: . . . ]ERRLONNA MAQI R[U]T[E]N[I] The very weathered and uneven surface of the stone detracts from the general clarity of the inscription. The first stroke of the L is unclear, as is the final stroke of the second N. The next character appears to be M rather than A. Only two notches of the first I are discernible, and the first stroke of the third R is incomplete. The first stroke of the T and the final E and I are doubtful. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 912."

Handy for the road (despite an electric fence) and in an absolutely beautiful setting with views across Ballinskelligs Bay towards Waterville.

A view of Uragh stone circle, which has a very large axial stone with a wiggle in it from this angle. It’s set on a raised plateau between two loughs and beyond it, at the head of Lough Inchiquin, there’s a waterfall, just visible. It’s a fine day with sunshine breaking through the clouds.
