I spent well over a month talking to investors to get the actual data behind what’s happening to the games industry. I was going to say “enjoy!” but it’s, uh, not great.

“It's A Sad End, But In My Opinion, At Least We Got One”: What Dragon Age Devs And Creators Have Said About The End Of The Series
The past few months at BioWare have been chaotic, and from the outside, quite confusing. Here is what we can glean from developers and creators.

FOLK MUSIC FRIDAYS!!

“THE GARDEN OF GETHSEMANE” is a song I wrote for Chris Cornell. During a dark period in Chris’ life he sent me a late night text which read “If you swallow the coin from the wishing well, your dreams will come true in heaven or hell.”

The Road to Summerfall - Part 2

I guess the best place to start is with leaving BioWare. Right off the bat, I'll say I enjoyed working there - a lot. Until I didn't. I started in 1999 with BG2 and ended in 2016, 2 years after shipping DAI and after spending a year on the game which became Anthem.

Last week, @awintory.bsky.social & I sat down to chat about @mikelaidlaw.bsky.social about going from working at BioWare to starting his own studio, and debuting Eternal Strands! Very inspirational to chat to someone who also started out as a junior writer 🥹.

Why did SWTOR get shuffled over to Broadsword if it was such a big earner for Bioware? (Spoiler: Bioware never really acknowledged or felt ownership of SWTOR)

I finally finished the biggest and most difficult cosplay I’ve ever done, and I’ve never been prouder. Thank you Dragon Age: The Veilguard for my new evil princess. Enjoy 🖤

I actually am probably more open to criticisms towards BioWare as well for a lot of the shift in direction, though at the same time this is an overarching presence and a huge challenge in AAA space when it comes to making games.

If I really dig into my empathy, I can kinda see the thinking here. Like, let's say you don't actually know much about games. You're in a big office with a bunch of other execs who also don't know much about games. What are they all saying?

"Live games do big numbers!"
"Action games are hot!"

I read shit this this and I'm truly baffled by how these numb-brained suits keep getting opportunities to fuck it up again. This is my BioWare swag, curated over the years. As a huge fan, I never once said "ooh, it would so much better if this was multi-player". How do you fuck up so immensely?

Look, I'm not a fancy CEO guy, but if someone said to me "the key to this successful single-player IP's success is to make it purely a multiplayer game. No, not a spin off: fundamentally change the DNA of what people loved about the core game" to me, I'd probably, like, quit that job or something.

Imagine if EA allowed BioWare to create the singe player Dragon Age game that Mike Laidlaw wanted instead of chasing the Multi-player/Live Service fix. Imagine if they killed Project Dylan after Casey Hudson first left the studio. Imagine if they didn't spend 1/

Anyone looking for a freelance game writer / narrative designer? Would love to chat about your project!
Shooting my shot: I’ve been writing for and about video games since 2013, and this year I’d love to do some work on yours! I’ve written for Lucasfilm, Rolling Stone, Boss Fight Books. I did the oral history of Morrowind for Polygon, a Bethesda documentary for IGN. I’ve also made a couple solo games.

For those still on the fence, "Dragon Age The Veilguard" is on sale at Amazon (only them as far as I can tell) for $49.99 regular release and $69.99 for the Deluxe Version for both PS5 and XBox.

It's a great game and this is a great opportunity to experience it at a discount.
