I was watching a Netflix series recently in which a character spoke of people having a “right to be ill.” I thought that claim was interesting. We usually think of a right being the right to express certain powers. We don’t normally think of there being a right to weakness. Maybe we should.

There’s only two possible theories of the relationship between work and leisure that I can see. The first is our current ethos, that life is made meaningful through productivity and the purpose of leisure is to rejuvenate. All leisure is just break time on this account.

Was listening to a discussion on a podcast recently and one of the interlocutors mentioned a philosopher who argues for antinatalism on the basis that people’s lives are mostly miserable. He goes so far as to argue that even people who think their lives are going well are actually mistaken (lol) and

For our Enemies, BCP 1979

O God, the Father of all, whose Son commanded us to love our enemies: Lead them and us from prejudice to truth: deliver them and us from hatred, cruelty, and revenge; and in your good time enable us all to stand reconciled before you, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 🕯️

If my kid, God forbid, felt suicidal, I absolutely would want to know before letting someone I don't know talk to them about it. But if the alternative is they don't talk to anyone, I'd rather not know about it.

I honestly can't fathom how any parent could feel differently.
Teens calling Idaho's suicide hotline are being told they can't proceed with the conversation without parental consent. Many of the callers are then hanging up.

Idaho approved a strict parental consent law last year.

A society that does not believe in community, in creatureliness, in finitude, in limits and boundaries, in vulnerability, and in mutual dependence will yield increasingly pathetic attempts at immortality projects such as this.

Some post-liturgy reflections.

The great things in life are those things which we have received which we could never have earned.

The first of which is creation, a gratuity obviously prior to any good work or achievement.

The second is redemption, as free and gratuitous as the first.

Penal substitution is a repetition of the mistake made by the Galatian Christians. It makes the law the arbiter of salvation. Subordinates even God to the law such that he cannot forgive us unless someone gets their teeth kicked in to satisfy the demands of the law.
