The closest parallels to Trump's changes to government are not in the private sector: they are Hungary under Orban, Brazil under Bolsonaro, or Turkey under Erdogan.
The removal of merit from public service is a form of administrative backsliding designed to serve democratic backsliding.

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F.
