You know, I'm not seeing a whole lot of AI helping with day to day things. It sucks for research, eats data and processing power for things I don't need it for, and constantly needs correcting for things it should be better at, like data analysis. Maybe some day but not now.

Not happy about the gerrymander wars, but if some states have nonpartisan districting and some dont, it's not a level playing field.
Just hope the playing dirty doesn't extend to making facts up to justify actions. Has to be a line somewhere.

One of my favorite shows is The Rockford Files, and if you want to know how far California and EPA regs had to go to clean up LA's air, watch that. It's a lesson in why regulations work.

I love @strictscrutiny.bsky.social esp how you all explain these complex legal issues.
I wonder what you think the US laws and gov may look like a year (or so) from now, after yet another insane ruling from SCOTUS.
I have trouble getting my mind around where we're headed.

My personal experience with AI is that it works ok when you give specific parameters. Like uploading notes and having it organize them. Queries based on a specific source it's accessing seem to work well. It does ok with adjusting email texts and outlines, but they always need a lot of touch up.

Working on the end of the academic year grant reports and all I keep thinking about is "why do people think grants are free money"?
Grants: great for things that help students; not great for my sanity.

In case anyone was wondering if there was a plan for this administration, there is.
Privatize everything.
Sell off lands and buildings.
Break departments and systems.
Tell everyone it doesn't work.
Let private corporations run it, but only CERTAIN private corporations.

Because no one spends as much on science as the US does, destroying NIH, NSF, NOAA, NASA, EPA, USDA, USGS, etc. is leading to a brain drain, but it's not to other countries but rather from science. This senseless destruction of US science will hurt the US and the world for a very long time.
To see why destroying the US science enterprise is so detrimental to the world, we have to realize that the US spends more on research and development than any other country in the world (by far), and if we remove China and Japan, the US spends almost as much as ALL other countries combined.

One of the biggest problems with AInin education is the emphasis on tools for faculty. A bigger issue is telling students what they can and shouldn't do with AI.
Ethical AI use would go far in helping students navigate the real world and classroom.

Walz (and my wife) have got it right when he said the Dems should create a shadow govt similar to the UK. Every time something happens in education the Education person responds etc down the line. Make them the go-to person. Easier than trying to have everyone trying to be on all the insanity.

This is what happens when media thinks a candidate isn't exciting enough. Yeah, sure they get clicks and buys, but also get attacked to the point media is losing its first amendment rights. Nice trade off. But sure, it's exciting and money!

Andrew Jackson got a SCOTUS ruling against him and said basically "fine, let them enforce it". Which isn't how this is supposed to work, but here we are again.

I'm working on a presentation to faculty to rethink how we talk students about AI. Rt now, its "don't do that, its plagiarism". Ok that's fine, but we also need "Use it for these other things that will help and not plagiarism". AI isn't going anywhere and we need to help students prepare for it.
