Funny joke but just to be clear it's not two sides of the same coin, it's two separate coins. The pride coin is in a different pocket than the humility coin

Once Zohran was on a panel about funding settler colonialism. His dad was there and I started talking to him. I said, You must be proud of your son. He said, I don’t know, let’s see what he says tonight.

I had a professor of Jewish Studies at UChicago who made the administration very angry because every year he made a proposal for the university to create an on-campus memorial to the worldwide victims of the UChicago economics department.

If you believe all human beings are created b’tzelem Elohim, in God’s image, then you must speak up now against the daily atrocities in Gaza.

Your reading is wrong and your assumption that it explains Podhoretz's war-mania is wrong too. He hates Iran because he loves Western empire and believes in it as global enforcer of justice, and because he is a deranged Islamophobe, not because he is devoutly adherent to covenant-as-you-imagine-it
July 4, 2025 at 11:53 PM
What Podhoretz thinks is not relevant to your idea which started this conversation - "I thought that's what the covenant was?"

Podhoretz is more qualified to tapdance on a glass table than to speak to what is essential in any matter of Jewish theology
July 4, 2025 at 11:32 PM
Your idea of what constitutes core Jewish theology - "the covenant" "God's command" etc - is crazy right wing interpretation which is easy to polemicize against. Unclear why a good person should buy into it unless they want to polemicize - but so much already to get mad about? Love your neighbor

Who cares? Podhoretz is a stupid freak and not my Rabbi. Is he yours?

He just sold out Yiddishkeit by forgiving its explicit denigration because Trump made the morally heinous and intellectually stupid decision to bomb Iran. His stupid ideas aren't evidence of what is essential to our theology

Lecturing anti-genocide people that genocide is actually an intrinsic part of their theology is not going to work when they have experience living that theology with totally different values and/or know that history shows potential of their religion to be so much else!
July 4, 2025 at 11:10 PM
Seems like you came into an irrelevant thread so you could outline a right-wing interpretation of Judaism just so you could decry it. Weird because there are many internet places where you could actually confront people who actually interpret their Jewish religion in that stupid violent way
July 4, 2025 at 11:04 PM
A pacifist is someone who rejects any violent solutions to their problems, to believe this is incompatible with being Jewish & feeling bound to Hashem id to choose highly limited right-wing perspective (whether to advocate for violence or against Judaism, either way stupid + wrong)
July 4, 2025 at 10:44 PM
Even within this hyper-right-wing framing of Jewish religion, attacking Iran has nothing to do with that. Iran != "evil natives" of Palestine/Eretz Israel

Militant assholes can find a lot in Talmud/Tanakh to back them up; so can pacifists and universalists and pragmatists and good people in general
