Think about how much of that scholarship was enabled by funding from institutions like the NEH, the NPS, and the Smithsonian, all gutted by Trump, and (relatively) extant academic job & funding opportunities for people to do the work (all basically gone now).

The vast body of research that Ken Burns relied upon to make his new documentary on the American Revolution would be practically impossible to be produced today, what with the defunding of humanistic scholarship, the collapse of stable academic jobs, the attack on public history & academic freedom.🗃️

They recovered over 180 bullet shells at the CDC. Debris from shattered glass is still being cleaned up. I am completely stunned at how quickly the news cycle has moved on. This was an act of terrorism targeting public health experts, and the response seems to be a collective shrug.

After Kristen Welker let National Security Adviser Michael Waltz lie and evade on NBC's "Meet the Press," she wound up her interview by asking him for his Super Bowl pick.
That's how you normalize fascists and tell them you're friendly enough that they can come back later and lie some more.

No one's blaming Democrats for causing this crisis, but yes, many of them are failing to meet this moment.

One Democratic senator could bring the chamber to a halt. House Dems can go to fed agencies being gutted by Musk with cameras in tow. Governors can push back. State AGs can bring lawsuits.

If your Christianity causes you to be offended by someone asking the most powerful person in the country to be merciful towards the powerless, then you have profoundly misunderstood the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Jan 6 was investigated and largely prosecuted as domestic terrorism. The pardons should be reported and spoken of accordingly. An endorsement of terrorism. Trump sprung his terrorist network - including, by extension, himself.

If you are a lawyer, you advocate to save democracy. If you are an elected rep you use legislative power to protect your country. If you are a journalist you write truth in the face of threats to democracy.

If you are a faith leader, you do this. Everyone has a role. Stand upright in yours.
Wow. Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde fearlessly calls out Trump and Vance to their faces. This is heroic.

Every act of courage matters now.

Don't leave it to someone else - an authority, someone with power. You need to be brave.

The U.S. has spent the last 40 years nurturing a culture that deems immediate self-gratification to be the only true measure of "freedom." Is it really a surprise, then, that Americans were so willing to shuck collective values like democracy and public health when goaded on by a con artist?

This matters. Not because I think Trump is capable of mercy or empathy towards these vulnerable groups. But because it is a public act of defiance.

Contrast that with all these other powerful people in this country signaling nothing but appeasement and obedience.
Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde to Trump: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are gay, lesbian, and transgender people in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives ... and the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals"

Writing is thinking.

It’s not a part of the process that can be skipped; it’s the entire point.
This is what's so baffling about so many suggestions for AI in the humanities classroom: they mistake the product for the point. Writing outlines and essays is important not because you need to make outlines and essays but because that's how you learn to think with/through complex ideas.
I'm sure many have said this before but I'm reading a student-facing document about how students might use AI in the classroom (if allowed) and one of the recs is: use AI to make an outline of your reading! But ISN'T MAKING THE OUTLINE how one actually learns?
