Interesting bit here, the libertarians took over an existing town (pop ~1000) and some residents actually happily went along with them on drastic cuts to services, and eventually reaped the consequences, an echo of every fable where deals with the devil only bring out what was already in your heart
They couldn’t pass some of the initiatives they wanted. They tried unsuccessfully to withdraw from the school district and to completely discontinue paying for road repairs, or to declare Grafton a United Nations free zone, some of the outlandish things like that. But they did find that a lot of existing Grafton residents would be happy to cut town services to the bone. And so they successfully put a stranglehold on things like police services, things like road services and fire services and even the public library. All of these things were cut to the bone.

This also isn't funny because it led to a change in the behavior of the broader bear population in the area such that neighboring towns also started to experience increased bear attacks, but again, the way that it is put, is funny, and cute
It turns out that if you have a bunch of people living in the woods in nontraditional living situations, each of which is managing food in their own way and their waste streams in their own way, then you’re essentially teaching the bears in the region that every human habitation is like a puzzle that has to be solved in order to unlock its caloric payload. And so the bears in the area started to take notice of the fact that there were calories available in houses.

By pretty much any measure you can look at to gauge a town’s success, Grafton got worse. Recycling rates went down. Neighbor complaints went up. The town’s legal costs went up because they were constantly defending themselves from lawsuits from Free Towners. The number of sex offenders living in the town went up. The number of recorded crimes went up. The town had never had a murder in living memory, and it had its first two, a double homicide, over a roommate dispute.

Seeing how many people have a similar story (grew up conservative and became liberal due to being repulsed by awful conservatives around you) I'm surprised there aren't more thinkpieces like "fellow conservatives, we are driving innocent moderates to liberalism by being too rude". Only the other way
David Pratt 21 hours ago I was pushed to the left not by how liberal my college was, but by how thoughtlessly, dopily conservative it was. And yes, it helped that we had a "coordinate institution" that was indeed liberal. But nothing I studied made me a lefty. Some of the people I had to study alongside did that.

He's "fixated" on a topic but whenever you bring it up he "pivots" to another topic. We may be working from different definitions of the word "fixated". Overall this piece is surprisingly vitriolic for a no-byline official "editorial board" thing
making the offer. And while he no longer defends eliminationist rhetoric about Jews, he remains fixated with Israel. Whenever confronted with his most radical views, the undeniably talented politician simply smiles and pivots to "affordability."

A reply mentioned this guy fell for a hoax so I had to look it up. Some guy made up a joke character, a fake philosopher named Botul whose philosophy is called botulism, and the author of this op-ed seriously quoted Monsieur Botul in his book

For Terminator 2 they blew up a real office building in my hometown, it was news for weeks. They built extra fake floors on top and blew up the fake floors

The building was chosen because scouts couldn't find a location in the Los Angeles area that would allow for a low-flying helicopter. The area was lit with xenon lights on towers and the helicopter light. The explosion was practical and filmed with about 9 to 10 cameras plus one aboard the helicopter, and remote cameras inside cars for more dangerous shots, to fully cover it. It was led by pyrotechnician Tom Fisher. It was a difficult effect, requiring hundreds of gallons of gasoline to portray a giant fireball, and taking hours to rig completely.
