🌱🌾🌍🌺🌿🌲🌴Botanical University Challenge #BUC2025 Who was the first woman botanist elected #FRS to Royal Society? Agnes Arber - in 1946! Royal Society started 1663. Botany was major area of science. How many other women should have been elected over the centuries. Much wasted talent!

Fascinating essay by @martinebotany.bsky.social on spiny solanums (tomato et al. relatives) as an example of all the important natural history research left to be done. Great observations on pollination and symbiosis... A very inspiring Sunday morning read!

My newest tattoo is based on the first field excursion of my lab at SU when I started it up in 2021. As part of my MS student Zach Crum’s thesis project on the diet of invasive blue catfish, we collected some big fish. Literally the first one cut (47 pounder) had a whole wood duck in its stomach 🐟🐡🦆

IMO paying close attention to species and simply describing what they do is a worthwhile endeavor unto itself.

Guessing I am not alone.

It's a shame no one will probably ever write about 2012-2022 Science/Academic Twitter and all the ridiculousness. Who could forget Water buckets/mosquitos, fake profiles (sciencing_bi being perhaps the most known), and so many others. It's a real missed sociological opportunity.
