Instead of “teaching” me how to engage constructively with people I disagree with (or flat out dislike) and pushing me to consume media I don’t enjoy, howabout a whole lot of people learn to take “no” for a fucking answer.

The argument that we owe people we dislike unfettered access to our bodies, social lives, and free time as an exercise in “fairness” or as exposure training for all the jerks we don’t get to choose is bullshit. Always was, always will be.

People like this rarely use “fairness” arguments or take meaningful action to expand everyone’s rights or access to power in political or economic spheres. They only do it when they feel entitled to something you don’t owe them, like your body or inclusion in your private social life.

And I’ll tell you something else for free: Nerds can be very good at spotting unfairness and that’s a good thing on the whole. But there is a certain kind of nerd who weaponizes the language of injustice *only* when it comes to matters of personal pleasure and preferences.

I get a lot of weird, hostile emails related to the blog but never so virulent as when I suggest ejecting sex pests and joy-killing, hostile assholes from the optional fun things you do with people you like in your free time.
