I beg my science colleagues to speak with the media about what's happening now.

When I was given the opportunity, I spoke with Nature about HHMI massive cut. I am an immigrant on a working visa, and I am not a professor. Anyone can talk. Silence in the face of injustice is injustice in action.

Of the 4000 researchers at NIH, only 20% are tenured. They’re going to fire all the rest as their contracts come up for renewal, absolutely decimating research at the NIH. This is catastrophic, not just for Americans, but for the whole world.

Looking at some survey data here. Trump/Elon cutting off all cancer cure research is the issue that freaks voters out more than any other, also the one they've heard the least about. Important for voters to hear more about this.

I’ll keep saying it…every Friday night, the nightmare becomes massively worse (go
take a look at the news on the Fridays gone by.)

Now, they’re cutting the indirect cost rates on our grants by much less than half of their previous levels.

Bye bye medical research.

1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

My weekend with immunologists devising new strategies to treat cancer, allergy, Alzheimer’s, autoimmunity and infection. The WH has just paused peer-reviewed NIH funding that pays for these studies. If you care about human life, write your representatives. Demand that NIH funding is restored asap.

@hccvpdac.bsky.social Yesterday someone said that this is most likely temporary and I’m overreacting. Most folks are either not understanding the gravity of the situation or they don’t care.

@hccvpdac.bsky.social Hi Howard, what are organizations like PanCAN doing to help with the current situation we find ourselves in? They should come up with some kind of Action Alert so more people can react out to their elected officials.

a) posponing by 4 months the resubmission of a SUPER TIME SENSITIVE grant that might not be funded, or b) submitting the renewal knowing that the original will be automatically WITHDRAWN, even if it was going to be funded.

This is how we slow progress on deadly diseases like pancreatic cancer.

Yet another example of how cancelling NIH meetings is impacting research: I have an R01 application that scored right on the cusp of funding. Council meeting is in 4 weeks. The next resubmission date is in 6. If that council meeting is delayed more than 2 weeks, I will face a choice of...
