Hooray!!!! ☀️
*Action without Hope: Victorian Literature after Climate Collapse* is out today! The official release got pushed back due to an issue w the art, & despite being mostly about literature it's very visual.

So to celebrate its full entry into the world, a thread of some of my favorite images from it:
Action without Hope
A study of how writers from the early phases of our prolonged climate emergency used aesthetic strategies to redefine the category of action. What does it feel like to live helplessly in a world that ...

A short blog post from my book *Oil*: thanks to all the folks at Bloomsbury! @bloomsburylit.bsky.social
"The wreckage strewn by old petro-dreams has never been more manifest, and the question of how to build a more just and democratic future never more urgent."

"The Age of Oil" - Bloomsbury Literary Studies Blog
A skeptical take: “the age of oil” is a useful tagline for our burning world, but what the phrase doesn't name seems just as meaningful as everything that it does.

404 has the details. But in a number of interviews w those who've interacted with the Musk gizmocrats, AI and integrating government systems with AI comes up repeatedly. This isn't surprising in itself. AI is big in all tech now. But fits with what is described here.
New from 404 Media: inside the gov meeting where Musk ally laid out plans for data sharing across gov/AI. We got audio. In the call an employee pushed back and said the plan would be “illegal.” Musk ally said “we should still push forward and see what we can do.” www.404media.co/things-are-g...
‘Things Are Going to Get Intense:’ How a Musk Ally Plans to Push AI on the Government
404 Media has obtained audio of a meeting held by Thomas Shedd, a Musk-associate who is now heading a team of government coders. In the call one employee pushed back and said one of the planned moves ...

For @publicbooks.bsky.social, I reviewed Elizabeth Anker's fascinating & extremely ambitious "On Paradox," which critiques almost the whole theoretical connection between politics and aesthetics (and then rebuilds a little). Books should take big swings! www.publicbooks.org/beyond-the-d...

if there were reporting

"What started Thursday as a political purge of the internal security services accelerated Friday into a full-blown coup."
Having watched with growing alarm the developments of the last 24 and 36 hours in Washington, I thought I’d take a stab at how the US media would cover this story if it was happening in a foreign country. Here’s that story that should be written this weekend: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-s-jun...

JP Morgan’s report of 2020 warns of the desperate urgency of climate action:"[delay] opens us up to potentially catastrophic outcomes, which might be impossible to reverse.” It beggars belief that they now backpedal on net zero promises. They have sold their children’s future for a mess of potage.
While flames engulf Los Angeles, the six largest U.S. banks have chosen to withdraw from the #climate UN-backed Net-Zero Banking Alliance in the span of just one month. Trump boom coming for fossil fuel companies, and financial institutions would hate to miss out.
