As someone who
(a) is way older than 16, but
(b) doesn't want to provide documentation to any social media platforms

The age verification laws coming into effect today have so far been a nothing-burger. No platform has required anything to substantiate my age.

Waiting for the shoe to drop.

I guess it's time I made some decisions about which (if any) platforms I am willing to jump through age verification hoops for, and what verification methods I am willing to use.

(Seeing as Dec 10 is tomorrow, and all.)
Despite not being designated under Australia’s under-16s social media ban, Bluesky is now asking local users to verify their age to access certain features.

🧵So last week I asked Kiwis and Aussies if people prefer their fairy bread with margarine or butter, crusts on or crusts off, squares vs triangles. I figured since it has been ages since I've sampled the food of the fae, I should make sure the recipe is correct for my upcoming book launch party.

For the life of me, I can't understand why so many light fixtures are designed with exposed bulbs. Do other people really not find those hard on their eyes?

"we're all living in two different worlds and none of us have the whole story" -- important thing to remember.
reposting with alt text because this feels incredibly significant. the right-wing disinfo machine means a lot of the people grieving Charlie Kirk never heard any of the things he said that would have tarnished his brand as Guy Who Just Wants to Have Dialogue Across the Aisle

🧵
A lot of people have called out the Republicans for their hypocrisy on Charlie Kirk's murder (and yes, I'll call it what it is), but all of them tend to focus on "so it's bad when a Republican is killed but not when it's a Democrat." And I think that's missing a more subtle but more pressing issue.

It's extremely strange (in a good way) to go to the doctor with yet another "my body is being weird again", and with one look she has a diagnosis and a standard treatment. Things are rarely so straightforward with my body.

I expect this is coming for Australia in December.
bsky.app Bluesky @bsky.app · Aug 22
Unfortunately, Bluesky is unavailable in Mississippi right now, due to a new state law that requires age verification for all users.

While intended for child safety, we think this law poses broader challenges & creates significant barriers that limit free speech & harm smaller platforms like ours.

Is there a word for describing the funk that comes from being on the wrong side of the planet to offer comfort hugs to friends who need them?

Audible is trying to sell me a "new book" by an author who's been dead for over 60 years. 🤦‍♀️

In a dream, I was given a task. It was a simple, non-urgent task which dream-me said would take about 5 minutes.

So naturally my brain decided that this Really Important Thing required me to actually wake up so that I could do The Thing for real, because lol who needs sleep anyway.

Thanks, brain.

First crochet project is finally complete. Hung around his neck, the scarf is longer than he is tall. (Replacing an extra long knitted scarf that went missing years ago.)

Next I'll try a beanie. 🧶
