This sort of absurd, ultra-bleak reading of the remarkable prosperity of modern societies is not only embarrassingly wrong - and I saw a historian retweet this sincerely (!!) - but also helps fuel not materialist, left-wing politics, but rather reactionary right-wing politics ('RETVRN-ism').

In the campaign the pattern was that there was a fake, imaginary Trump the media created, and the more the real incompetent Trump faltered the more the fake competent Trump was inserted into stories, analysis etc bsky.app/profile/lilb...
Is, "Too big to ignore," possible at this point? His senility got too big to ignore when he had a mental breakdown during his 2024 campaign. Most media outlets ignored it.

Having $800M in your investment account vs $400M doesn't change your life at all, but having a labor market where your underlings are desperate to cling to jobs vs one where they can walk across the street and get a better offer makes a huge difference in the day to day reality of the very wealthy
