The Baileys, according to the Democrat’s own telling, are a middle-class duo from Massapequa whose political journey began as Reagan Republicans in 1980, socially moderate but fiscally cautious and became his personal bellwether. “Schumer first introduced the world to the Baileys in his 2007 book, Positively American, winning back the middle-class majority, one family at a time,” the host said. “In it, he mentions the Baileys, an astonishing 265 times in 264 pages. He’s apparently been talking about them for years before the book was published.” The host continued to jibe how Schumer admitted the Baileys voted for President Donald Trump in five of the last six presidential ballots cast between them in the past three elections. In March, he speculated they “probably voted for Trump” again in 2024. Oliver’s larger point was blunt: catering policy to the imaginary Baileys risks dragging Democrats rightward while alienating their base.

How much of the money raised by these groups actually makes it to candidates and party committees? After subtracting these massive operational costs-the payments to Mothership, the fees for texting services, the cost of digital ads and list rentals—the final sum delivered to candidates and committees is vanishingly small. My analysis of the network's FEC disbursements reveals that, at most, $11 million of the $678 million raised from individuals has made its way to candidates, campaigns, or the national party committees. But here's the number that should end all debate: This represents a fundraising efficiency rate of just 1.6 percent. Here's what that number means: for every dollar a grandmother in Iowa donates believing she' s saving democracy, 98 cents goes to consultants and operational costs. Just pennies reach actual campaigns.

I couldn't help but think of this when I saw a report yesterday on the pro-Obama super PAC, Priorities Action USA, which ran into similar trouble telling voters about Mitt Romney. [Bill] Burton and his colleagues spent the early months of 2012 trying out the pitch that Romney was the most far-right presidential candidate since Barry Goldwater. It fell flat. The public did not view Romney as an extremist. For example, when Priorities informed a focus group that Romney supported the Ryan budget plan -- and thus championed "ending Medicare as we know it" -- while also advocating tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, the respondents simply refused to believe any politician would do such a thing. [emphasis added] As Jon Chait put it, focus group participants were hearing accurate descriptions, but the truth "struck those voters as so cartoonishly evil that they found the charge implausible." Imagine how frustrating this must be to Democratic strategists. They can tell a room full of voters the truth about Romney's agenda, and a whole lot of folks respond, "That can't be right."

Keeperman: That’s absolutely right. I think you’ve hit the primary people and figures. You’re capturing what the zeitgeist is here, for lack of a better term. It’s still being developed, and I’d be lying to you if I said that I had some intentional project or aesthetic that I was trying to cultivate with this. The idea is that the future is discovered. We’re not going to be able to predict ahead of time what this new culture will look like. It is throwing these ingredients out there based on a shared understanding at the highest level of abstraction, an alignment that, at least for now, is defined in opposition of both the left and wokeness — which is easy — but also in opposition to the conservatism that has come before, not because it’s antagonistic toward that kind of conservatism, per se, but that kind of conservatism is limited in what can produce creatively.
