Our spooky image is (an artists impression) of a proto-galaxy named AzTECC71. At a distance of 12.9 billion light years this is one of the earliest galaxies to have formed with hundreds of stars forming each year in its dense clouds of dust and gas. Boo! #astronomy

🔭 Tomorrow is Halloween. 🎃 To celebrate last night I photographed the Skull Nebula (NGC 246). 💀The Skull Nebula is a planetary nebula, essentially a bubble of gas being given off by a dying star. The star is at the center of the nebula and marks one of the two "eyes" of the skull.
A telescopic image of a field of stars. Near the center is a bluish-gray bubble of gas. A star at its center of the bubble and another seen just to the right make the bubble look somewhat like a skull with two glowing eyes.
