Look out for noctilucent "night-shining" clouds over the coming evenings and early mornings.

The electric-blue wispy clouds appear towards the northern horizon around an hour after sunset and an hour before sunrise.

23:00 BST and 02:30 BST are ideal times to spot them.

Good luck & Clear skies

Successful eclipse viewing! Took my telescope + solar filter to my local park, plus glasses (thanks to @gostargazing.bsky.social, FLO, and Astronomers without Borders), and orrery (borrowed from work @universityofleeds.bsky.social). Glad the clouds mostly stayed away! 🤩🔭

I’ve recently got back from a wonderful cruise with @fredolsencruise.bsky.social, where I had the honour of being their @gostargazing.bsky.social on-board astronomer! It was amazing to run stargazing sessions at sea away from light pollution (they even turned the deck lights off for us!). 😃

See the International Space Station join the Parade of Planets tonight (25/01/25)!

Look towards the southwest at approximately 18:35. It will appear like a bright star moving at speed from West to East.

As it approaches Jupiter, it will disappear into Earth's shadow.

This is not the Moon but the planet Mercury! The photo was taken yesterday by the BepiColumbo spacecraft on its sixth and final fly-by to prepare for orbital insertion late 2026.

Despite the planet having surface temperatures of 430c, ice water had been found in the shadows of its craters!

Wow! Last night, our telescope revealed incredible details of Jupiter. The image shows what astronomers call a "shadow transit"—the black dot is the shadow of the Galilean moon Io, which can be seen as a dot to the bottom right. #astronomy

The revamped @sherwoodobs.bsky.social near Mansfield, UK is looking stunning! Built on the foundations of a former Victorian reservoir it features a high-tech planetarium, science discovery centre and of course their fab observatory with huge telescope. A visit is thoroughly recommended!

👻 👻 👻 Happy Halloween! 👻 👻 👻

Our spooky image is (an artists impression) of a proto-galaxy named AzTECC71. At a distance of 12.9 billion light years this is one of the earliest galaxies to have formed with hundreds of stars forming each year in its dense clouds of dust and gas. Boo! #astronomy

Another successful night of stargazing at the North Pennines National Landscape Stargazing Festival! Jupiter was spectacular and many guests observed Saturn for the first time. The evening finished with amazing views of the Andromeda Galaxy, 2.5 million light years from Earth! #northpennstarfest

At our star-camp at Doe Park Caravan Site, part of the North Pennines stargazing festival, guests enjoyed views of the Orion Nebula using our 12” Dobsonian telescope! You can see it for yourself with a simple pair of binoculars just underneath Orion’s three belt stars. Clear skies! #astronomy

This is what Go Stargazing is all about! Our team were at Twice Brewed Stargazing in #northumberland yesterday evening. (Much) younger astronomers were observing Saturn, the “Hunters” full Moon and comet #TsuchinshanATLAS.
October 18, 2024 at 9:13 AM
Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS was easily visible naked eye this evening, its long tail looked spectacular and its bright nucleus easily visible in binoculars and a telescope. It should grace the evening skies for days perhaps a week or two to come. Good luck! #tsuchinshanatlas #comet #astronomy

MAJOR SOLAR STORM EXPECTED!

Heads up, folks! Over the coming nights, there will likely be a fantastic opportunity to see the Northern Lights from everywhere in the UK, Northern Europe, and North America. Look out as soon as darkness falls on 10/10/24 and 11/10/24.
