THIS 👏🏻 WHOLE 👏🏻 THREAD 👏🏻
The myth began in 1998

A man named Andrew Wakefield published a paper in the UK medical journal called the Lancet falsely claiming a link between the MMR vaccine and autism

Researchers were unable to reproduce the findings and in 2004 an investigation by reporter Brian Deer identified..

🪡🧵
📣 LOUDER for the media outlets in the back!!!
Editors take note because I'm tired of these ridiculous headlines:

Vaccines as a cause of Autism has been *disproven*.
By *numerous* studies.

This is not an "unfounded" theory.

This is "Many of us checked, actually, & it isn't fucking vaccines". 🫠

I think that tensions between autism researchers and the Autistic community may exist, and there ARE things researchers can do about that.

Collaborations between Autistic researchers and our broader community WILL overcome this problem.

We are beginning to be represented.

Researchers interviewed 18 Autistic adults and found 5 themes:

volatile career journey
need for ongoing career support
impact (+ / - ) of social interactions
the important role of the organization
catastrophic impacts of poor experiences

our professional trauma varies but we all seem to have it.

sounds messy, overwhelming, & non-consensual

I'd like to propose: Big Talk

The opposite of small talk!

Long-form conversation w/ a primary speaker talking about an area of intense interest with one or more other participants who contribute conservatively

I’ve yet to see a social prescriber (long waiting list) but I’ll send my GP practice a copy of this encouraging #autism research.
It suggests that accessible, inclusive #SocialPrescribing in primary care could support the well-being of autistic patients.

Dear researchers doing this stuff. Please check whether your cohort is autistic.
The main cause of autism is autistic parents having autistic children.
I know this goes against everything your ancient Professors are telling you to write in your papers, but try. Just try.
Thank you.

Okay, wait... Has anyone come across a paper investigating supposed causes of autism that *did* control for likely autistic parents, or even mention this as a limitation?
#AutRes
It's so embarrassing how many papers on supposed "causes" of autism fail to control for whether parents are autistic.
In today's research on autism, reading all the papers that claim that IVF may 'cause' autistic people. Can't find even one team that ask whether one or both parents is autistic.
Factors for infertility typically include age (e.g. autistic people may marry later) or/

I work in academic medicine on the research side. Not a researcher. Sadly, there isn't much research on these conditions in adult autistic populations. For instance, I found one publication documenting the prevalence of sleep challenges in autistic adults, none on what to do about them.

It represents about a million autistic people, where just one does something unusual.
How helpful is it to say, "Oh no, they might all do that!"
Perspective is important, eh?
