Hey, I'm Katie!

I'm multiply ND, queer and permanantly knackered.

I'm a community researcher on cancer service experiences of marginalised people.

I've published things and conferenced things, and now I'm doing a PhD around Autistic trans+ people's experiences of health and social care.
I had no idea that I looked this intense when I speak publicly.

Five side-to-side pictures showing me, rosey-faced, talking into a microphone. Two of the pictures show me squinting, probably processing or thinking, others show me wide-eyed and eyebrows arched like a Disney villain.

Good grief.

At www.treadgolds.co.uk we enjoyed presentations from placement hosts and students who had completed Research in Practice. Great buzz and enthusiasm for this new aspect of @phdlife.bsky.social. Thanks for sharing @kmunday.bsky.social and all the contributors

I can't be the only adult who likes a good "well done" sticker.

I use stickers on my wall calender for a little dopamine hit but also as a visual reminder that I am doing things. Actually.

It is sometimes hard to see progress during PhD and other bits of long-term work.

This year I'm reminding myself that my health comes first. I'm inviting myself to slow, breathe.

I'm still working out what I need as a newly(ish) dx ND trans person. Someone who is experiencing perimenopause and seeing how this interacts with long-term health conditions that remain unnamed.

They have an ongoing 'pupil voice' at Little Man's school. He was asked about what he does at P.E and he replied:

"Running, throwing, asparagus."

I literally could not love this kid any more.

To all those Asparagus kids and families - I see you!

I have been watching, reading and listening intently over the last few days as Autistic people and the wider autism community dissect Autistic Barbie. Here are the things that have stood out to me the most about Mattel's newest doll.
Mattel Launches First Autistic Barbie Doll
On January 11th, Mattel launched the first Autistic Barbie doll, designed in collaboration with the Autistic Self-Advocacy Network. Featuring unique articulation and accessories for autistic representation, the doll aims to celebrate diversity. While it has received positive feedback, some concerns regarding stereotypes and representation have also emerged.

I've low energy and low demand recently. I've come into the year even slower than I planned to and thought I would.

We had our first table top games night in a long time and it was just what I needed. No screens, no outside world. Just us and games we've played a 100 times before.

Take it easy x

I just got my Disabled Artists 2026 Calender and thought I'd share!

@artiecarden.bsky.social s work is on August (my birthday month ❤️)

[I flick through the month- per-view calender, which has two pieces of beautiful disabled artwork on each page. All artwork is a reflection on disabled life]

- Helping a friend with recruitment -

If anyone here knows a queer and neurodivergent TikTok user aged 16-25 who would be up for an online interview (including silent scrolling time!), would you let them know about my study?

I would be so grateful 🎓🌈

Snowy this morning down south. It finally came to us.

Rude and highly accurate.

[A research notes notebook from Jay. It's cover takes on the style of a dictionary entry. White text on the blue cover reads:

PhD.

[Noun]

Abbreviation for postponing hard decisions.]

This is still one of Little Man's favourite parts of the farm...The automatic door to the cafe and toilet.

He starts wondering off that way and I know what he's after. Those sweet five to ten minutes of opening and closing the door. I sit and watching him delight in this play.

At least someone in this house has made an effort for new years.

Image shows Alfredo (my Finch burb) dressed in black trousers, black braces, white shirt and black bowtie. He has a cheery 2026 head band on.

A summary and a plainer-language summary of my recent paper with Steven Kapp and Charlotte Morris.

Our paper was entitled: Transgender and gender diverse autistic adults’ experiences of (un)belonging.

And can be accessed for free.
Understanding Belonging: A Summary of Recent Trans Autistic Research
The study examines the experiences of transgender and gender diverse autistic adults regarding belonging and exclusion across three levels: macro (workplaces), meso (healthcare, education), and micro (personal relationships). It highlights the complexity of their experiences influenced by systemic ableism and transphobia, advocating for structural changes to enhance inclusivity and supportive environments.
