Hey, I'm Katie!

I'm multiply ND, queer and permanantly knackered.

I'm a community researcher on cancer service experiences of marginalised people.

I've published things and conferenced things, and now I'm doing a PhD around Autistic trans+ people's experiences of health and social care.
I had a great session at @writershq.bsky.social yesterday and got myself two gold stars!

If I have to give myself stickers and snacks to write my PhD work then so be it.

Chufty badges all round!

I'm a year into my four-year PhD course. I'm using a PAR approach with a group of co-researchers.

I keep debrief notes on our meetings and reflect on things more widely, including violence in the academy for trans Autistic students and faculty.

Community-driven research enriches understanding and advocacy, reminding us of the importance of kindness in sustaining human connection amidst challenges. #Cancer #Healthcare #Kindness #Accessibility #Community #Stories #Storytelling
The Power of Kindness in Healthcare
Kindness is a free yet scarce resource in healthcare, often hindered by systemic issues like staff exhaustion and bias. Sharing personal stories fosters empathy and connection, creating a sense of belonging. Community-driven research enriches understanding and advocacy, reminding us of the importance of kindness in sustaining human connection amidst challenges.

#NeuroAffirming practice involves unlearning harmful methods and embracing #neurodiversity. It emphasises inclusive, empathetic approaches that respect individual autonomy and lived experiences. This blog is an invitation to reflect on our practice.
Transforming Care: Benefits of Neuro-Affirming Approaches
Neuro-affirming practice involves unlearning harmful methods and embracing neurodiversity as valid. It emphasizes inclusive, empathetic approaches that respect individual autonomy and lived experiences. Practitioners should adapt their methods to support neurodivergent clients, fostering an environment of trust and safety through continuous reflection and advocacy for systemic change.

In this blog I share recommendations from two pieces of work on Autistic people’s experiences of accessing, or trying to access, gender identity healthcare. #Trans #Autistic #Accessibility #AutResearch 🎓🌈
Inclusive Practices for Better Gender Identity Care
To improve gender identity healthcare for autistic and neurodivergent individuals, key recommendations include hiring a trans healthcare coordinator, enhancing GP training, prioritizing trauma-informed care, and ensuring accessibility. Participants emphasise the need for empathy, communication, and a patient-centered approach that recognises and addresses the unique challenges faced by this community.

Transforming Cancer Care: Listening to Disabled Voices
The project with Help and Care, Wessex Cancer Alliance, and Macmillan Cancer Support highlights the inequities disabled people face within cancer services. Participants shared distressing experiences showing systemic bias and barriers. The research emphasizes the importance of listening to these voices, advocating for dignity, and fostering empathy to ensure equitable treatment for all individuals in healthcare settings.

Supporting neurodivergent people and lives needs to be done with an understanding that we, like all people, are complex. It's time this complexity is embraced in services that support us.
Supporting Neurodivergent Lives: Embracing Complexity
Human beings are complex. We’re constantly changing, adapting, and responding to our environments — emotionally, mentally, and physically. For neurodivergent people, this complexity is often heightened by a world that isn’t built with their brains in mind. Supporting neurodivergent people means embracing the unpredictability and the chaos that makes us human. Chaos theory reminds us that a small change in initial conditions can lead to huge shifts in outcome.

It is nearly two years on since Harley Bruce, Steven Kapp and I published about gender identity healthcare access for Autistic people. I take this opportunity to reflect on what we learnt and what (if anything) has changed.
Enhancing Accessibility in Gender Identity Services
Autistic and neurodivergent individuals face significant barriers in accessing gender-affirming healthcare, as revealed by research on their experiences. Discrimination occurs when disclosing autism, leading to feelings of frustration and alienation. Accessibility issues further complicate care, with non-binary experiences often overlooked. A call for continuous learning and empathy in healthcare is essential for improvement.

I’ve been holding onto this for a little while and quite frankly it’s only a starting point for me. Understanding the Flawed Theories of Simon Baron-Cohen – from empathy disorders to spectrum 10k. #BoycottSpectrum10K #Autism #Research
Understanding the Flawed Theories of Simon Baron-Cohen
The critique of Simon Baron-Cohen highlights the negative impact of his theories on the perception of autistic individuals, framing autism as a deficit. His work reinforces harmful stereotypes, particularly for autistic women and gender minorities, and has been influential in diagnostic criteria and treatments. Despite new insights, he clings to outdated ideas, marginalizing autistic voices and perpetuating misconceptions. Better research must be collaborative and rooted in lived experiences.

Work/life balance is complex during a PhD, especially when working within your own community. There is so much pressure put on PhD students which can so easily lead to burnout. I continue to grapple with systemic challenges in academia to shield my wellbeing.
Navigating Work-Life Balance in PhD Pursuits
The author emphasizes that work/life balance is complex during a PhD, particularly within their community. They critique the pressure to prioritize studies, leading to burnout among students. Drawing from personal experiences, including an autism diagnosis, they advocate for self-awareness in managing mental wellbeing, while grappling with systemic challenges in academia.

Trans Aware Cancer Care had a gorgeous time starting to sew together our flag.

Over the last year we have spoken and created art with nearly 100 trans+ people & allies. It is our collective artwork that is being sewn into a very large trans flag.

This is a creation of love, connection and hope.

I wonder if its a seasonal thing or another busy year drawing to a close.

Either way I'm reading anf listening to music more, and I'm playing Stardew Valley like no ones business.

Initial Steps for Parents After a Child Comes Out as Trans
"My child just came out to me, what do I do?" I have been asked this question many times as a professional. For many of the families I work with I am the only openly queer person they know. My first piece of advice? Breathe, everything feels a little better after a deep breath, it gives us time to process and focus (and for neurodivergent people it can often help us avoid any facial expressions that could be misconstrued!).
