This article unlocked a memory for me: recording movies and shows on audio tape and listening to them again and again.

I made a tape of the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark, with me narrating the onscreen action in real time. It’s lost to the ages, but I wish I still had it!

I see lots of people complaining about Christmas music, but what they really should be complaining about is starting it before Dec 1.

(I mean, if the window is only 3.5 weeks it would be a lot more tolerable.)

As someone who has trained hundreds of people how to use computers and basic productivity software, it physically angers me that Microsoft would change a culturally understood interface to freshen up appearances for marketing sake. Changes confuse people.

Those should be serviced by two separate companies. Not separate versions of the same program where you can get into confusion about which someone has, I mean separate companies. Anti-monopoly. Half of you can have the jazzy updates market share and the other half can have sensible continuity.
There is a great moral and cultural divide between a) those who get bored and constantly want to “freshen up” a screen they look at all the time and b) those who just want to keep things the same so they know where the buttons and tools are.
I am increasingly of the opinion that people who change menus and look and feel of computer software just so that you know it's a new version should be personally forced to play tech support to my mother for five months.

The bubble cannot burst fast enough. Even if it takes the rest of the world down with it, it'll be worth it to kill this stultifying technology before it consumes an entire generation.

It's such a terrible thing to teach kids. You don't ever need to learn be good at anything, you don't ever need to think harder than your first instinct, you don't ever need to *try*: the magic box will do it. And if it's not right, you just ask it again.

GenAI is literally harming children's ability to think, to communicate, to create, because the lesson of ChatGPT and all these abominations is that you only need to have a vague notion of what you want to be given a finished product.

That the process of physically creating a thing is just drudge work that can be outsourced to automation. That an idea is enough to justify its own existence. Well, ideas aren't special, I'm afraid. They're the language of your thoughts. Not all of them can or should be made real.

Generative AI is based on the faulty premise that your first idea - the half-formed pondering that signals only the beginning of a long, possibly fruitless journey - is already good enough to exist. That it requires nothing but actualisation to be complete.

Any creator will tell you that it's the process, the *work* of creating something, that determines its final form. Your "idea" might be for one thing, but in the *making* of it, you get a thousand new ideas that change it into something else.

Neat little thread about writing and where a writer’s Ideas come from
I've had a few 'what do you do' convs recently, and everyone on hearing I'm an author comes out with "so how do you come up with ideas?", just like every book or movie about a writer has them staring numbly into space because they don't have an idea for the next book. And look, that is Not It.

I have attended ten high school football games this year, and it seems like EVERY band plays “Pretty Fly for a White Guy.”

How did THAT song become this generation’s “Louie Louie”?

Inception walked so Tenet could run
does anyone else remember the way inception was sold as this super confusing movie? and that newspapers were printing visual guides on what the plot was? and then you saw the movie and it was actually really straight forward?

what was that about
