The power of curriculum. Changing perceptions of the past through beautiful story telling based on rigorous historical research
Year 7 today, started Mansa Musa and Mali. One genuinely asked “I don’t mean to be racist but I thought black people were slaves back then?”

An hour with the opening story from the #changinghistoriesKS3 enquiry changed his view! Just look at this writing 👀

Last year these gentlemen from Curia Vitkov (a reconstruction of an early medieval noble residence in the Czech republic) decided to go for a little winter walk.
Yes, of course the medieval way!

if there's ONE thing I've learned from @wnsdpod.bsky.social it's that every time you see some strain of "ooh medieval Europe was so wretched" handwringing you can blame VICTORIAN ENGLAND.
5) The idea that medieval Europe was particularly violent is a very modern development in which medieval barbarism was a mirror held up to European white modernity serving multiple functions - a way to distance oneself from the past but also to find heroic origins in it.

So what did Vikings really look like?
TV/movies tell us they looked like dollar-store biker gangs, wearing black leather, covered in dirt and allergic to colours... but in reality... they looked like 1970s pop singers.

Seriously, thread time.🧵

I think I know where I am going to be spending my birthday next year :-)
The excellent Middle Ages in the Modern World conference is back next year, and we're taking a strand on Medievalist Games! We've got a particular focus on 'Temporalities'. Call for Papers deadline 10 January for event 24-26 June at Kings College London.

This is a longshot. Does anyone know any good sources to investigate the impact of the investiture contest in the 11th and 12th century on the ordinary person? Did they think there was a problem that need to be fixed in the first place? Did they care who fixed it? Did they like the outcome?

In honour of today being Trans Day of Remembrance I thought I would highlight one of the most interesting people I have come across from medieval history, St Wilgerfortis. Her cult grew after their death, speaking to unhappy wives and the non-binary all across Europe. doi.org/10.1093/hwj/...
