"We monitor many frequencies. We listen always. Came a voice, out of the babel of tongues, speaking to us. It played us a mighty dub."

I like books, dogs, music, human rights, history, science, and RPGs. T1D. Neurodivergent.
Who was ever more disappointed than young me when I learned that asteroid fields are mostly empty space and not the action packed adventure that The Empire Steikes Back showed me....

I’ve been holding this in but… seems remiss not to recall the assassination of the abortion doctors? The bombing of clinics? Why act as if this is without that context?
The brazen murder of a CEO in Midtown Manhattan—and the cheering reaction to his execution—amounts to a blinking-and-blaring warning signal for a society that has become already too inured to bloodshed, @adriennelaf.bsky.social writes. theatln.tc/ZRcsrreK

Here I am, hating the insurance company for decades as a T1D.
Hate for the health insurance industry has long been there. You just weren't listening.

My absolute favorite part of the dead salmon wearing trend (scientists are, as the article says, reasonably sure it's a fashion trend) is not that orcas have fashion, it's that they, too, have the occasional wave of 80s nostalgia.

Just pause and contemplate the loss of real, meaningful knowledge involved in thinking that paper is a mere uniform planar surface, and not a crafted object in itself, with specific forms and structures that must be respected.
Excellent letter in the latest London Review of Books from Robin Kinross about the woeful state of book production in the UK. The first principle of the grain direction of paper has seemingly been lost, and bookshop tables of trade hardbacks a depressing experience.

Politicians may claim there is an “immigrant crime wave,” but the data proves that is a myth.
Debunking the Myth of the ‘Migrant Crime Wave’
Data does not support claims that the United States is experiencing a surge in crime caused by immigrants.

The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands are my go-to "first" holiday movies which get played on December 1st. I refuse holiday cheer before then.

I have become increasingly nitpicky about playing RPGs as intended by the authors. I get that the consensus is to simply have fun, but I feel like I have played most games using the same modality. World of Darkness games should not "feel" like a D&D game set in a modern world with vampires...

There are an alarming number of people who believe that waiting patiently in line is somehow beneath them. Like being polite makes you a sucker. This is never more obvious than while driving.

Tore off another great 5-player game of Eclipse: Second Dawn for the Galaxy last night via Tabletop Simulator. Love the game even when I don't win. Such a wonderful mix of euro economics and Ameritrash dice combat. My favorite game these days for sure.

You'd think having grown up Gen X during the Cold War, we'd be uniquely positioned to stomach these turbulent times. Unfortunately, we are disarmed of our youthful ignorance and ambivalence.

I can't believe how late to the Penny Dreadful party I am. Ten years later and this show feels like it was made for me. It is easily the best thing I've watched in ages. I remember hearing the hype about it when it first came out but I must have just phased on it completely.

So it's clear that Gaetz was just dodging the report that he knew would be damaging, right? The report should be released now that he's withdrawn. But it won't be.

Played another round of the classic "Merchants and Marauders" last night (this time via tabletop simulator). I get the impression that the game is fairly well liked but every time I play, I get the sense that it could be better. There are probably too many random elements driving victory.
