Eclectic Curmudgeon

Bookstores and libraries are my happy places.

On the internet, no one knows you're a Canadian.
You know what word we don't use often enough to describe Trump?

Pathetic. The dude is pathetic, as in "pitifully inferior or inadequate" or "absurd, laughable".

The powers that be have determined that the male equivalent of a "Karen" is a "Donald"

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I envy dogs. They remain blissfully unaware of Trump and all that that entails.

Hey folks, I never heard about Jessica Chastain's new show The Savant, set to premiere *this* Friday, until today when I read that AppleTV is quietly shelving it. Two points:

First, AppleTV+ needs better publicists.

Secondly, AppleTV+ needs executives with courage.

The outrageous mistreatment of Jimmy Kimmel has today taught me a new word: the verb "jawboning", which seems to be a form of the rhetorical *ad baculum* trick performed by one with the actual power to make good the threat. IOW, extortion.

Charlie Kirk's murder got me thinking about the 19 children who were murdered at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde TX as law enforcement loitered outside, which brought to mind Randall Jarrell's famous, unsettling poem "The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner"

If there is a more useless senator than Susan Collins, I can't imagine who it might be. This guy might be the one to knock her off her pedestal.
This story has it all: aquaculture, Black Flag, Bernie Sanders, Star Trek as policy, John Hodgman, male tears, and a candidate citing Luthen’s monologue from Andor.

Meet Graham Platner, the Maine oysterman trying to crack the senate. @grahamformaine.bsky.social

Graham Platner’s campaign launch has been a sudden sensation. But what he’s building now is rooted in the work of a lifetime.

"He's in the process of establishing a dictatorship."
It's a simple 8-word sentence. News media could tell the public that. They know it's true. They report on the various steps toward autocracy every day. But they're afraid to utter that 8-word sentence. Which is more evidence of how true it is.

It's April 11, 2025, and I just want to remind everyone that the President of the United States is criminal -- a twice-impeached convicted felon and golf cheat who owes E. Jean Carroll $91 million dollars for sexually assaulting and defaming her.
