Founder at WattCarbon. Lapsed academic. Still wonky.
Yes!!! Went to see this today in Oakland. So richly deserving of the award.
“No Other Land” won the Oscar for best documentary. The movie, directed by two Israelis and two Palestinians, chronicles the Israeli military’s efforts to demolish Palestinian homes in an area of the southern West Bank known as Masafer Yatta.
‘No Other Land,’ whose politics deterred distributors, wins best documentary.

Question for heat pump peeps. Is it possible that the condensation on this window is from the cold air being blown at it from the HP outside? It’s the only window in our house with this issue.

This is pretty rad, except I kind of think you'd want the teeth going in the other direction.
The invention of the "safety bicycle" was actually just half of a bifurcation that also gave rise to the "danger bicycle"

Excited to be up and running with our new cold climate Mitsubishi heat pump! It's paired with electric resistance backup heat that will keep us toasty for those coldest few weeks of the MN winter. Now we just need to replace our gas range and disconnect that gas line.

The only thing that helps is actual decarbonization. If you want to buy offsets, do it from a decarbonization project like a heat pump.

Carbon offsets for air travel sound like a great idea—a get-out-of-jail-free card for frequent flyers. But they cost too little to be worth much. nyti.ms/3VCY1UV
We Wish Buying Carbon Offsets for Your Flight Helped. It Doesn’t.

This is very astute. Electrification doesn’t always have a $$$ ROI, but can be the biggest carbon saver per dollar spent. It takes willpower to go this extra mile.
Solar is cheap, but heat pumps (air source, or district geothermal) in old, steam-heated buildings is terribly expensive, even with IRA tax credits -- that's why it's a heavy lift, requiring a strong campaign from students, even on campuses whose administrations would like to do the right thing.

I get the feeling that nearly everyone opining about Syria actually knows nothing. I certainly don’t. Since it doesn’t fit neatly into any of our existing narratives, you end up with a bunch of weird takes. I wonder if there’s a potentially good outcome possible?

Home charger installation day. Been putting this off to see if we could get by on public infrastructure. It works, but I can’t get the app to recognize the device.

I'm happy to report that I will not be increasing the security around me. While my current security detail (Walter, George (not pictured), Winnie, and Bingo) are generally asleep on the job, it does not appear that my unwavering commitment to saving the planet has inspired any serious animosity.

If the RECs/GOs from these facilities are sold to buyers in other countries on dirty grids, the emissions "canceled" in those other grids should be assigned to Sweden.
Sweden's remarkably clean power grid. In November, this was its electricity generation mix:

Hydro 38%
Wind 31%
Nuclear 28%
Bioenergy 4%

Zero coal or gas.

This is generally what the bike portion looks like of our “shared” roads. Glorious.

I don’t really mind the Hunter pardon, but given the fact that Joe clearly has no fucks left to give, this would be sublime.

I would bet that a scenario in which we imported 100% of our solar panels with no tariffs would still work out great for pretty much everyone. Except the oil industry. Why is domestic supply so important?
“According to a preliminary decision posted on the U.S. Commerce Department's website, the agency calculated dumping duties of between 21.31% and 271.2%, depending on the company, on solar cells from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.”
US sets tariffs for solar panels from Southeast Asian nations
U.S. trade officials announced on Friday a new round of tariffs on solar panel imports from four Southeast Asian nations after American manufacturers complained that companies there are flooding the market with unfairly cheap goods.

There's a lot of hypocrisy when it comes to climate. Asking for sacrifice, then being unwilling to do the same when your turn is called, leads to zero-sum thinking and policy failure. Looking at you Berkeley. www.latimes.com/environment/...

This is such a telling contradiction. In one breath, "carbon removal shouldn't replace emissions reductions" - in the next breath, "If we don't reduce emissions we can just use carbon removal instead"

Wood Mackenzie actively contributing to the corrosive impact of carbon removal discourse:
