Really exciting book news out of Norway. And while the article focusses on the sealskin binding, I'm even more excited by the fact that these neumes are not square, which suggests a date well before 1200.

It's Michaelmas, so it's also the anniversary of the battle of Auray (1364), which marked the beginning of the end of the Breton War of Succession begun 23 years earlier. And you know what? Let's mark it with a 🚨BOOK GIVEAWAY🚨 this time! (Charles de Blois has never had a stranger memorial...)

{New book} This book examines the messy legacies of Jeanne de Penthièvre and Charles de Blois, duchess and duke of Brittany, and their fight to claim the ducal title at the start of the Hundred Years’ War. www.arc-humanities.org/978164189408...

Looking forward to teaching a short course on digital approaches to (medieval) history in the autumn. Does anyone have any favourite things they'd recommend the students read?

This is an excellent thread which also points to one very important basic aspect of persecutions: They have to be manufactured & prepared. The frequent narrative of innate hatred or existing tensions often ignore how long it takes to generate the kind of hatred that flourishes into violence.
Medieval story time (that is actually about Alligator Alcatraz merch):
Let’s talk about Godwin Sturt and how he merchandized the death of his 12-year-old nephew in 1144.

My student Tatiana Petrukhina defended her dissertation "Custom in the Long Twelfth Century" on Friday the 13th. Seen here with her examination committee. It is a powerfully and elegantly argued thesis about practical reasoning about custom.

Which leads us to the *reason* why these headlines like “The Medieval Peasant Worked Less Than You!” keep on appearing. It’s because a nostalgia for an imagined past is used to excuse the mistakes of the present. 8/

Advice that applies to both bodybuilding and art history: part one.
Eat protein forward meals.
They help to build muscle and provide slow release energy needed for long days in the museum.

You know why European countries are so quiet about the El Salvador situation? Because they started the normalisation of extraterritorial detention of migrants and asylum seekers, often without any due process. The UK’s Rwanda plan. Italy’s attempted plan with Albania. And some still want to do it.

We are very sorry to learn of the death of the medieval historian, Bob Moore, who published as R.I. Moore.
Elected a Fellow of the RHS in 1975, Bob Moore taught at Sheffield and Newcastle. He was known for his work on persecution and heresy and as an early proponent of world history bit.ly/4iXCAb2
