A parchment letter from 1386 was until recently the oldest evidence for the earliest ancestor of the Swedish-Finnish noble families Svinhufvud. The letter is a deed of sale through which a man called "Jønis Swinshwow" buys the manor Höjen with an adjacent farm. The upper right corner is damaged. 1/

Read the interview with Sven Meeder, who has published the latest volume in the series Monumenta iuris canonici. He talks about early medieval canon law and especially about the misnamed Collectio CCCC capitulorum (in reality 404 chapters!).

A huge moment -- Melvyn Bragg steps down from In Our Time after over a quarter of a century. What a programme and what a legacy! Just a model for how to make great, clever, engaging radio, and a twenty-seven-year experiment that proves there's a huge global audience for smart, scholarly programming.

The last page of the first part of Gratian's Decretum, ending with D.101 d.p.c.1 in a manuscript from the 1190s, written in Bologna. The second gloss layer in the bottom contains a version of the apparatus "Ecce vicit leo" on C.1 authored before 1210 by Petrus Brito, professor in Paris. 1/

More than a hundred persons came to the National Archives in Stockholm yesterday to celebrate the scholarship of Claes Gejrot-once my Latin teacher now my friend-with a Festschrift. He was totally surprised.

«La edad de los vikingos», de @winroth.bsky.social, fue uno de los libros más vendidos de la Feria del Libro de Xixón. De hecho, arrasó y el sábado nos habíamos quedado ya sin ejemplares.

My student Tatiana Petrukhina defended her dissertation "Custom in the Long Twelfth Century" on Friday the 13th. Seen here with her examination committee. It is a powerfully and elegantly argued thesis about practical reasoning about custom.

I gave a lecture at the Société d'histoire de droit in Paris about the connections between Scandinavian and European canon law. It was very good to see friends and to try out some of my ideas about the unique Scandinavian tradition of producing vernacular handbooks of #canonlaw for the laity.

I am very sorry that my friend, the incomparable Ed Peters has passed away. I do not know anyone who has written so much of real interest. His chapter on heresy and magic in a book I co-edited is brilliant. live-sas-www-history.pantheon.sas.upenn.edu/people/emeri...

I attended the party in Lund where my friend Stephan Borgehammar received a festschrift. Stephan was suitably surprised when he suddenly found a room full of academics with champagne glasses, while guiding grand-children around the. University.

"The work of historians and knowledge of their findings are of decisive importance today." Pope Francis issued a letter about the importance of studying (not gossiping about) history. He talks specifically about church history, but he also generalizes. He is not wrong! www.vatican.va/content/fran...
