In the homophobic hostility of the mid 1980s, a photo booth offered some degree of privacy. Any public display of affection would have been too dangerous - and potentially illegal.

Travelling up to Liverpool to ‘create content’ as they say.
More will be revealed soon. 💜

I was diagnosed with HIV in 1998, two years after effective treatment for HIV had been identified.
The medication was still very new.
I was told I could expect to live another 20 years, which at the time was more than had been granted to many of my friends.
HIV treatment works. Tell everyone.

This is a brag:
In August I had surgery for an injury which had prevented me from running for over a year.
Today I ran 10km in less than an hour.
I’m well chuffed.

As a young gay man I did not expect to get old.
As a result of HIV and homophobia, many of my generation did not.
Ageing is a privilege.
Pics: Aged 20 in 1988 and 58 now.

There’s more pics of me and the QT cuties in the latest issue, as well as wonderful portraits and reporting from across the queer arts scene.

In years to come people will forget that Graham Linehan was once funny.
November 7, 2025 at 10:12 AM
Graham Linehan masquerades as a victim.
In reality, he’s an aggressive, obsessive bully - and Victoria Coren-Mitchell just called him out on it.

Understood.
Same.

I reckon it’s likely that there’s been a gay winner of People magazine’s ‘sexiest man alive’ before Jonathan Bailey, just not one who is openly gay, so in this context ‘openly gay’ is justified.
What do you think?
November 5, 2025 at 10:13 AM
Is it right to describe someone as ‘openly gay’, rather than just ‘gay’?
Here’s my rule: if it relates to a longstanding title or achievement, using ‘openly’ acknowledges the history of homophobia that resulted in many not being able to be open about their sexuality.
Other times, it’s unnecessary.

Anyone >15 years older is old.
Anyone >15 years younger is young.
I don’t make the rules.

So long as I get called ‘dad’ more than ‘grand dad’, I’m good.
November 4, 2025 at 10:39 PM
Setting out for an evening run in shorts and tshirt an elderly neighbour told me that I was ‘a very brave boy’.

58 years old and still getting called ‘a boy’?

I’ll take it!

The Ask Us Europe research project is seeking information from people who are on HIV treatment and living in Europe.
The results will help to ensure we are offered the best / easiest treatment to meet our needs.
If this is you, please take 10 minutes to complete the survey.

I’ve never been within licking distance of him (and of course I wouldn’t dream of such a thing, unless I’d received explicit and enthusiastic assent) but I did see him on stage in The York Realist and, more recently, in Richard II.
Pro-tip: Always check your background for unintended messages.

When I was at drama college in the 1990s I was told that being openly gay would limit my career, that nobody who was gay could make it as a leading man.
Sexiest Man Alive may seem a trivial title but for it to awarded to a defiantly open gay actor still feels significant.
Well done Jonathan Bailey.
