Yes, Reagan really said this. And yes he did a bunch of awful things. My controversial take is that church-state separation is NOT a partisan political issue. It's a founding American value. People arguing against it want their religion to reign supreme. With church-state separation, everyone wins.

I left before Trump fwiw. But like most people who are conservative, I was raised with those beliefs, in my case by fundamentalist Mormon parents.
It seems to me that most people do not consciously choose RW opinions, they are brainwashed into them from childhood. The programming often sticks.
