NEW: The Supreme Court cleared the way for the Trump administration to deport eight men — currently shackled in a shipping container on a U.S. military base in Djibouti — to South Sudan, a country where they have no ties.

Hours after ICE became the highest federal law enforcement agency in America history (and likely in world history), the Supreme Court lifts the last obstacle to ICE deporting people to any random country around the world, even in conflict zones or where migrants are enslaved.
Over dissents from Justices Sotomayor & Jackson (and a rare concurrence from Justice Kagan), #SCOTUS "clarifies" that its 6/23 ruling staying a district court's injunction against third-country removals *also* applies to the district court's later order requiring a remedy for those already removed:

Judge Bates says the rushed removal by HHS of 100s of websites containing gender-related data was an example of officials “acting first and thinking later.”

It also violates the law, he ruled, ordering the sites restored. ecf.dcd.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/show...

🚨 ICE disappeared a woman on Wednesday night. She was grabbed by men in plainclothes and taken to an unidentified location.

ICE is refusing to say where she is being held. It’s 72 hours later and not even a dedicated team of lawyers can find her.

This is WRONG. We can’t let this be the new norm.

Other countries provide birthright citizenship

In countries that don't, it can be difficult for babies to acquire citizenship & some end up stateless--without a nationality

That creates problems--a subclass of people w/out ID docs who are unable to access school, for ex.

ICE detention conditions are some of the worst they've ever been (though arguably in the initial years of the 1980s they were slightly worse).
“The people actually try to fight to get a bed, because 30 people just sleeping in the concrete floor... Two toilets, two showers for many persons... people take a shower at 3am because they don’t have time to do it in the day. They don’t have enough food.” web.archive.org/web/20250624...

NEW: DHS's claim that TPS for Haiti was terminated because DHS thinks Haiti is now "safe for Haitian citizens to return to" is FALSE.

According to the termination published in the Federal Register, the ONLY explanation Noem gave is that letting Haitians have TPS was "not in the national interest."

DHS terminated TPS for Haitians, affecting an estimated 348,187 people. Why? DHS said Haiti is "safe" in a press release then said the opposite in the Federal Register. (Updated with info thanks to @reichlinmelnick.bsky.social.)

DHS said publicly that conditions in Haiti are safe enough to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, then said the opposite in the Federal Register. State Dept. says Haiti is dangerous.

NEW: The Trump admin finalized an emergency regulation, which goes into effect tomorrow, authorizing DHS to impose civil monetary penalties for immigration law violations with far less due process.

The rule could lead to DHS imposing exorbitant fines on millions of people — fines they can't afford.

Accurate. It’s bad. People disappear for days at a time only to pop up in an overcrowded hellhole in Louisiana — or DHS finally admits the person was deported a few days earlier.

SCOTUS majority not deigning to give *any* reasons for staying the injunction of the district court - in the highest-possible stakes context & where the executive branch has acted appallingly - evincing real contempt for both district courts & the rule of law
#BREAKING: Over a (sharp) public dissent from the three Democratic appointees, #SCOTUS clears the way for the Trump administration to remove migrants to third countries *without* giving them an additional opportunity to contest whether they face persecution or other forms of mistreatment there:

A part of me thinks it’s bc of the attention the Alien Enemies Act expulsions got. Extensive media reporting & public outrage over the admin’s lawless denials of due process.

There hasn’t been the same kind of coverage or focus on 3rd country removals - even tho they’re no less appalling or lawless
I am struggling to square today's order with the Supreme Court's ruling that migrants targeted for removal to El Salvador under the Alien Enemies Act must be afforded meaningful due process. Why shouldn't these migrants, who face banishment to countries they've never stepped foot in, get the same?

Today’s unsigned, unexplained #SCOTUS ruling clearing the way for removals of migrants to third countries without any additional process is a disaster—not just on the merits, but because of the government misbehavior that it not only refuses to punish, but effectively rewards.

Me, via “One First”:
161. The Court's Disastrous Ruling in the Third-Country Removal Case
The majority did not just greenlight an especially odious immigration policy without any explanation; it did so in a case in which the government defied the district court—twice—with no consequence.
