The historic Black press and the attempt to criminalize journalists
I've long thought about the potential for U.S. journalists to be jailed in America for doing our jobs. We should remember how the government came after Black journalists in the not-so-distant past.

It's Black Press Day. And the historic Black press understood what it was like to be targeted, surveilled, charged with crimes, even jailed. As similar threats loom, we should take a look at this history. Read/Listen/Share/Subscribe to Fortify here: nicolefcarr.substack.com/p/the-histor...

Oh, I completely believe in resilience and the strength of democratizing forces. Black people in this country have no other choice but to believe. But America is in full throttle FAFO mode. So we have to ride this ish out.
But, we have muscle memory. Surely, we can right the ship. Eventually.

Spoke at Spelman College earlier today and repeated something I’ve said for the better part of the year: We’ve lost this experiment we call democracy.

Heard from some family in Jamaica yesterday. It was the first time we were able to speak via phone. Power and water has been restored to their area so the kids were able to return to school Thursday.

No doubt about it: Climate change made Hurricane Melissa way worse.

One point I’ve made in the years since writing this + a slew of other school board narratives is that none of this was isolated to your backyard, nor was it ever about “concerned parents” as whole.
This was a White-led, anti-government movement setting the stage for where we find ourselves today.

An anti-CRT movement targeted an accomplished educator — driving her out of two Georgia school districts.
The mission began inside a golf community clubhouse on a Sunday afternoon, where parents were coached on how to land a Fox News appearance.

This suffering-by-design has long been wrapped in racism: from Obama derided as the "food stamp president" to a former Gorsuch clerk telling SNAP recipients to "get off your fat, ghetto asses" (never mind that over a third of recipients are white).
Immiseration is the result. Racism is the vehicle.

Until now, Social Security disability benefits have been easier to qualify for as a person reaches 50+.
Trump's new rules would end that. Under the new plan, millions, many in red states, could find it more difficult to qualify.

Folks need to understand what it did to Black enrollment after year ONE. I laid it out in the forthcoming book…
And READ Adam’s The State Must Provide.
We didn’t need to guess the impact. Black folks HAVE KNOWN, HAVE LIVED IT and the pages of history do not lie unless you move to scorch the record.

it’s almost as if all of the things folks argued would happen after race-conscious admissions were limited - precipitous declines in Black enrollment, among them - are happening. weird how looking at history can tell you a lot. who would have guessed it.
Black student enrollment at elite colleges is dropping, by nearly half at some schools, just two years after the end of race-conscious admissions. This trend threatens decades of hard-fought progress in education. We must find new ways to ensure equity and representation.
