I filled up my outdoor bird feeders this week.

The birds have thanked me by flying into my garage and getting stuck, bouncing off the walls, and pooping on things.

Thanks, guys.

Someday we’ll need a blocklist of blocklists to block because they’re not good at blocking block-worthy stuff.

I don’t even know what I just said.
Caution to users of this block list! I've heard from several friends who have ended up on here somehow—maybe through sloppy use of keyword searching. I recommend not using this block list, or you will end up accidentally blocking your friends! bsky.app/profile/did:...

Despite the massive wildfire risk, October and November here in NJ have really been a boone to my cycling mileage this year. #cycling

It’s cold out, and the laptop is warm, so cat logic says sleep here.

“Bluesky is slightly more decentralized than, say, Facebook — but not by much. Yes, you can host your own data. Yes, you can scrape all of the content on the network. But you can’t do anything with it unless you’re attached to the Bluesky service.”

Maybe Bluesky has “won”
November has sucked so far. One upside of the terrible nonsense is that more people are fleeing X. Many are choosing Bluesky. I’ve seen a bunch of takes about this recently, but I keep seeing things I...

High quality video. If I run my own PDS… I’ll get that for free? (Running a PDS isn’t free, but paying for hosting on a BSky PDS makes sense).

Profile customisations, though. That’s a feature at the presentation layer (app, web). 3rd party apps don’t have to show the stuff you paid for?
To grow sustainably, we’re working on a subscription model for premium features like higher-quality video uploads and profile customizations (think colors and avatar frames), but Bluesky will always be free to use. We believe information and conversation should stay accessible to everyone.

It’s nice when my (current) favorite brewery is so close to home.

For years now all the local brewery beer I enjoyed most was a good 30-60 minutes away.

Not great for my wallet or my waist, but hey, gotta do the things in life you enjoy.

“Other companies”

I find interesting conversations on BlueSky, but the vibe that it’s an AOL or AWS monolith right now make me worry.

ATProto is so cool looking! But also young and immature.
Thanks for your patience, everyone! This is not a usual thing around here. If you look at DownDetector.com, you'll see all the other companies that are being affected by the same East Coast Internet backbone problem today
Oh brother. We back?

The outages aren't us. One of our bandwidth providers apparently got their fiber cable cut and has been on/off all day

Guess I should start looking to replace my decade-old Baratza Encore? (It makes great coffee regardless.)
Protip:

The burr type in the grinder you buy is important depending on the brew method you favor:

a) conical burrs = best for espresso
b) flat burrs = best for brew coffee (AeroPress -> Press Pot)

However, flat burrs are also really good for espresso. Conical burrs not good for coarse grinds.

This was my earliest BlueSky experience. And it was good!
And 90% of my feed was @mmasnick.bsky.social replying to people.

Email is based on protocols (POP/IMAP/SMTP). I don’t pay monthly $$ for email, but I probably give up some value got Gmail to do its thing.

What’s that going to look like for social media in the future?

Pretty sure it won’t be a bunch of people all paying $5/mo on their credit cards.
How do we all feel about the possibility that the long-term viability of a platform like this remaining not crappy would require many of us to pay a small monthly fee?

Yup yup. Here I am on BlueSky. If Ivory app starts supporting ATProto that’d be super.
Genuinely the biggest congrats to the whole @bsky.app crew on all the growth over the last month and for really riding the momentum well. You earned this moment.

Rebuilding my social graph over here. Somebody needs to build a tool for this!

*somebody totally could’ve done that and I’m just lazy this morning and didn’t look.

@kenwhite.bsky.social Hi Ken! I enjoy your writing, and wanted to call out that when you moved from Substack to Beehiiv your old RSS feed (popehat.substack.com/feed) stopped working and the new one (rss.beehiiv.com/feeds/6QXMLvJf2y.xml) exists but is not auto-discoverable on Popehat.com!
