I think the elephant and the rider metaphor about our cognition is overblown and at the very least misleading.
Most of our lives, we implement decisions we made carefully - either as individuals or as societies.
We go to jobs we planned decades ago, on roads the government planned carefully, etc.

I’ve done a lot of big dinner parties with lots of variants on ritual aimed at evoking the Sacred, and so far, surprisingly, the one that’s most successfully done so is building a hog pit and eating a pig as we butcher it
