Northland built some of the greatest minds in ecology, sustainable development, and conservation in the USA. Another huge loss for our country, for the environment, for our uncertain future.

The Indigenous People of North America have decided to go back to calling the Gulf of Mexico, “Chalchiuhtlicueyecatl”. It is what the Nahuatl People originally called it as it is the domain of the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, who is assoc w/water bodies, including the Gulf of Mexico.

As I say every year on Women In Science Day:

There are unfathomably many ways to be a woman.
There are unfathomably many ways to be a scientist.

Attacks on women and attacks on science go together, and it takes strength across the spectra of gender and science to stop them from breaking us down.

Trump’s executive order that utilizes the term environmental justice in quotations is a travesty. There is no “environmental justice” - we know that climate change and other environmental issues disproportionately affect those who are the least responsible for the climate catastrophe.

Should you bear near a poet with agita today, simply distract them with a math problem. Have them inventory their books. Alphabetize their TBR piles, shelved or otherwise. Bake cookies with them. Go watch the birds. Paint. Pet some dogs. Offer to take a walk with them. Rub their shoulders. 📚💙

Systems thinking and systems design are the most important things we can teach young people today. It’s how we solve people’s confusion about the intersections between fire ecology, forest mgmt, and climate change.
How do you incorporate systems design into your work in env ed?

"Who pays the price for climate destruction around the globe?
Not the fossil fuel industry pocketing profits and taxpayer subsidies as their products wreak havoc.
Everyday people suffer, with their lives and livelihoods," says UN SG Antonio Guterres

I didn’t expect good science in the form of conservation and wildlife management to be so on the Republican’s chopping block - but here we are. So hard to feel positive about a future for the young conservationists I work with when these are our leaders.

Lack of modes to effectively teach environmental and scientific literacy is why we have students disconnected from how they learn, their communities, and nature as a whole. Luckily, there are SO many things we can be doing and talking about with students to build these skills. #environmentalliteracy
