Hey everyone! Finally getting back on here, I wanted to share that I started a new job at Monmouth University as a Marine Fisheries Acoustic telemetry scientist. I will be leading efforts to document the effects of offshore wind farms on fish populations in New York and New Jersey, including sharks.
Today was my first experience with tagging Striped Bass!

Hi folks, hoping to get better about posting in real time, I had a pretty intense but motivating weekand wanted to open a thread to share some highlights, starting with the tagging of a 2 m dusky shark on Monday. This was a study species from my Masters so I was stoked!

Well, this isn’t great news…

Great to see our new paper "Health losses attributed to anthropogenic climate change" out in print today in @natclimate.nature.com, which builds on our landscaping project on climate-health attribution a couple of years ago, funded by @wellcometrust.bsky.social
🚨 NEW: Climate change is already causing 30,000 deaths per year - a global annual economic loss of $100-350B USD - but the true damage is probably 10x higher. Out TODAY in Nature Climate Change: the first systematic look at the science of "health impact attribution" 🔓 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Recent research shows that the potential of both carbon capture & storage and ecosystem restoration to mitigate climate change have been greatly over-estimated

It is not going to be possible to suck all that carbon out of the sky once it's up there

We have onlu one option: stop burning stuff

My latest for @the-revelator.bsky.social :

I spoke to experts about some of the most threatened species in US waters, the threats they face, the policy solutions they need to recover, and why the second Trump administration is likely to be a disaster for them.

Please read and share. 🧪🦑🌎
Donald Trump’s Second Term Will Be Bad News for Endangered Ocean and Coastal Animals • The Revelator
The waters around the U.S. are home to threatened species who need conservation policies to save them from extinction. They won’t get that for the next four years.

On the 13th day of #fishmas we also celebrate #FlatsharkFriday with the southern stingray, Hypanus americanus! I found this one down in the Florida Keys and it let me get real close. Of course, I was at the bitey end, not the stingy end, an important distinction! Happy #25DaysofFishmas 🦑

Interesting case study on the importance of local, non-English sources of information to help fill global knowledge gaps in invasive species research. I suspect this also applies to many other areas of research in ecology!
Science is not only done in English!!
We show that by doing searches in other languages we increased our understanding of the $ cost of invasive species (by a lot!!)
This is Specially important in areas where English is not widely spoken www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Non-English languages enrich scientific knowledge: The example of economic costs of biological invasions
We contend that the exclusive focus on the English language in scientific research might hinder effective communication between scientists and practit…

I have been gravitating towards Bluesky since I was exposed to my first starter pack over on the other platform (shout out to @whysharksmatter.bsky.social for that nudge) and decided now that I have a few followers that it was time to introduce myself. I'm a Peruvian-American marine scientist.
