Historian. Writing a book on oil and Indian Territory and the world the two have made. Every plot of land has a history.
When I've seen historians discuss Carter's energy policies it's usually framed as ironic that he promoted renewables while laying the groundwork for a huge coal boom. A more interesting framing would be to interpret the two as mutually constructive of each other.
RIP Jimmy Carter? How to remember him? Thread
- nuclear engineer, who did Solar & Western coal boom
-Deregulator & neoliberal turn in US
-Carter doctrine that began the bloodbath in Middle East post Iranian revolution?
- Rapprochement with communist China
- Humane anti imperialist ex-President

One of the seemingly little things about living in the present moment that I find deeply depressing is that, every day, someone is actively trying to scam you via text message. Every day you have to be reminded of humanity's worse capacities in a very direct and personal way.

Teaching 1960s-1970s environmentalism right now. What stands out to me more and more is how many years have now passed since that larger historical moment and how many people have lived their whole lives without experiencing the (relative) successes of grassroots political action.

Looking through old pics on my phone and I'm struck by this map found in a small county museum in Nebraska. It was likely commissioned for a few dozen dollars and yet does a better job of conveying mobility and overlapping nationhood along Plains watersheds than probs anything you'll find elsewhere.
