Never forget: We are here because of a system-wide failure to hold Trump accountable and mount an effective defense against the onslaught of authoritarian minority rule.

The much vaunted “guardrails” have failed spectacularly.
It's the refusal to enforce the insurrection and emoluments clause that really broke me. The text clearly says these things are aren't allowed. And the original meanings cover pretty much exactly what happened now. But it felt unfair to some to enforce them, so pundits and judges just said "nah."

Which is more amazing: the fact that America has vastly outperformed other advanced economies without higher inflation, or the fact that Biden gets no credit?

really can't be overstated that a core pillar of MAGAism is to steal your tax dollars and give them to Donald Trump
Oklahoma State Superintendent Ryan Walters is looking to supply the state Department of Education with 55,000 Bibles.

Out of 2,900 Bibles, only one fits Walters’ criteria: The Trump Bible.
'Trump Bible' one of few that meet Walters' criteria for Oklahoma classrooms
Bibles endorsed by former President Donald Trump cost $60 each online, with Trump receiving fees for his endorsement.

The latest Trump filing highlights the upshot of the Supreme Court's immunity decision.

Conspiring with friends to remain in power despite having lost the election, as you or I might: A serious crime.

Using the vast power of the presidency to do exactly the same thing: Definitely not a crime.

Brain doc here. Trump shows textbook confabulation: symptom of his increasingly severe cognitive impairment.

Absolutely fucking bonkers that a former FBI director publicly declares he believers a major party presidential candidate is an asset of a hostile foreign power and it won't even register as a blip. No media. No movement in the polls. No outrage. Nothing.

In this chat, we suggest a distinction between covering something (NYT does great reporting on Trump's autocratic plans), and *crusading.* The latter is wholly different: It uses saturation coverage to alert readers that they should be alarmed. That's just not happening w/r/t Trump's unfitness.
In this pod, we ask you to keep several things in your heads at once:

1) NYT does essential work on Trump threat

2) Biden probably shouldn't run; doubts about his ability to carry this through are too great

3) It's STILL true that NYT is asymmetric on Biden/Trump unfitness
One thing that's clear from the Biden/age story is this: NYT knows how to crusade when it wants to. And NYT is crusading against Biden's mental unfitness for office in a way it's just not doing with Trump.

On the pod, @whstancil.bsky.social and I break this all down:

Those arguing that it was inappropriate to pursue Trump in NY need to account for the fact that every other political and legal mechanism to hold him publicly accountable before the next election has failed.
Breaking news: The Georgia Court of Appeals ordered a halt to the proceedings in Trump's election interference case, meaning the case against the former president and his co-defendants will most likely not be scheduled for trial before the fall election.
