My second piece for the RNS series on Catholic higher education, this one on how "trad" schools seem to be growing and doing well financially.

Administration asks Supreme Court to dump 1935 precedent in Trump FTC firing case
A Justice Department lawyer urged the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to overturn a 1935 precedent that limits presidential authority as the justices weighed the legality of Donald Trump's firing of a Federal Trade Commission member in a major test of presidential power.

They're using the confinement box, one of the most horrific methods of CIA torture in the post-9/11 black sites, against migrants now. This is the direct result of the lack of consequences for the architects of the torture program. Either there will be criminal penalties for this or it will expand.

The real task isn’t “teaching people to spot misinformation.” It’s rebuilding conditions where verification, deliberation and accountability are possible. Critical thinking only works when the world around it gives those skills a place to take root.

Context matters.
Most discussions about “misinformation” treat the problem as if people simply don’t have good enough critical-thinking skills. It sounds intuitive, but it’s not entirely accurate. The problem isn’t just individual ignorance, it’s the structure of the information environment people are placed into.

There’s no telling how many similar stories are not being told for fear of retaliation.

By now, everyone should realize Trump is not going after violent criminals or the worst of the worst—he is terrorizing everyone, including U.S. citizens, and their loved ones.

I am calling for Wilmer’s immediate release from NWIPC—he has NO criminal convictions, he poses no threat to the community, and he urgently needs appropriate medical care since ICE is denying him the treatment he requires.

I am grateful for Wilmer’s willingness to let me share his story.

My constituent, Wilmer, was mauled by an ICE attack dog despite the fact that, as he has consistently explained, he was not resisting arrest or trying to flee—his wife and young children, all U.S. citizens, were forced to watch helplessly as Wilmer was violently attacked and dragged away.
