But what does "be held accountable" mean, exactly? We'll know once the actual post-arrest polling comes in.

Sunday reading: The Modern Conservative Tradition and the Origins of Trumpism

I wrote about how to situate the radicalism that defines today’s Right in the history of Modern Conservatism - and why Trumpism came to dominate rightwing politics and identity so easily.

This week’s piece:
The Modern Conservative Tradition and the Origins of Trumpism
Today’s Trumpist radicals are not (small-c) conservatives – but they stand in the continuity of Modern Conservatism’s defining political project

We’ve had fake names used in contexts of fraud and embezzlement in Philippine politics before: Jane Ryan, Jose Velarde, Jose Pidal. But oh boy, did they screw up with ‘Mary Grace Piattos’ because that is absolutely cartoon villain territory.

Thaksin Attacks the People’s Party
One of the biggest open questions in Thai politics is 1) what the “grand compromise” between the Thaksinites and the conservatives entailed, and 2) whether or not there is a possibility…

Who has precedence over children’s education? Parents or the state?

And what should they be taught?

That question matters to authoritarians, conservatives & liberals.

It has shaped the history of primary education.

Still looking for Southeast Asia watchers to add to my SEA Starter Pack! bsky.app/starter-pack...
Could Starter Packs be used to reverse-engineer Bluesky communities that don't yet exist?

1. create an empty starter pack for, say, Southeast Asian Politics
2. invite people to express interest in that community by requesting to join
3. presto, a curated audience, incentivizing content creation

The latest infuriating thing about this to come to mind: How well did this excuse work for Aaron Swartz and Sci-Hub when they did it for free? How well has it been working for the Internet Archive so far? Why are we only supposed to consider it acceptable when someone’s profiting?

Its sort of crazy that a member of Congress who is neither Jewish nor a citizen of Israel, and has never served in the Israeli army has been going around pretending to be an Israeli soldier.
He spent a month volunteering with the IDF packing medical supplies. Thats it.
