TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

"Dora" tells us that harvesting season is her favorite season as she gets to watch the early a.m. sunrise. It's also much cooler to work as they harvest the grapes at night when it's cold so the sugar levels are at its peak and the grape isn’t soft due to the heat. #WeFeedYou

“Ale" works in the carrot harvest in CA. She earns $3.05 for every box of carrots she packs. One box has 24 bunches of 7 carrots each. To earn $100 she has to pack 34 boxes or 816 bunches which represents over 5000 carrots picked in a day. #WeFeedYou

Did you know you pay more fuel tax on a single car journey than a billionaire does on a private jet flight?

Right now the gov is subsidising tax breaks, when they could be using that tax to generate billions for public services.

All avoidable injuries are bad, but context is essential. Alongside this story, it's surely essential to say that there were 133,000 car-related injuries in 2024 in the UK, including 1624 fatalities & 28k "serious" injuries. E-bikes aren't the major problem.

The Supreme Court just made it easier for ICE to stop you … for being brown. The Court sided with ICE, letting them continue targeting people based on race, language, where they are, or the kind of work they do. This ruling is a setback, but it’s not the end.

Every reputable expert I know considers mRNA vaccine technology to be one of the most revolutionary advances in medicine in our lifetimes. Its inventors won the Nobel Prize in 2023. Shutting it down now is pointless self-harm to humanity.
Release from HHS: HHS will wind down its development of the mRNA vaccine development activities under the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).
