Former Syrian President Bashar Al Assad ruled ruthlessly for over two decades. With the help of Russian and Iranian forces, he also carried out some of the most vicious acts of the country’s 13-year civil war. We have documented many of these, from chemical attacks to the bombing of hospitals 🧵

Watch all the prison release videos from Syria. Let Syrians feed you a taste of freedom. Imagine your own society opening its doors and borders. Imagine being free one day yourself, truly free. That’s what this moment invites.

It is so beautiful, so wonderful, so pure to see the Syrians who we have been so lucky to call our neighbours & friends during their exile speak of return & being reunited ❤️❤️

Thinking today of Elizabeth Tsurkov, whom I never met personally but who wrote for us on several occasions. She was for years a must-read analyst on Syria's civil war and the armed groups fighting it until Kataib Hezbollah took her hostage in Baghdad ~2 yrs ago. I hope her captivity also ends soon.

The lower underground cells of ⁧‫Saydnaya Prison‬⁩, infamously known as the "human slaughterhouse," remain sealed after the fallen regime disabled electronic gates and ventilation systems. These cells are referred to as the "red ward" or "death ward."

The Sednaya prison as a reminder that we can inflict on each other something worse than death is unbearable.
The relief is mixed with a sense of despair watching every video
These images should haunt, for the rest of their lives, anyone who helped keep Assad in power.

Almost 20 hours after entering Sednayah prison, efforts continue to reach underground cells. 1000s are believed to be in the 2nd & 3rd floors sealed underground.

I never heard about this torture before... it is even industrialized.

Sednaya prison reports will show us again, how authoritarian regimes are always supported on terror and murder.
Iron execution press in #SednayaPrison .

After he is hanged, they put him in the press and press him to become like paper.

His body and bones are crushed.

There are blood channels under the press.

Then his remains are put in a bag and disposed of outside the prison.

Regardless of your shitty geopolitical analysis. Regardless of legitimate fears for the future. If you can't celebrate the collapse of one of the most brutal police states in history & liberation of prisoners from torture dungeons, then there is something wrong with your politics & humanity.

The search for detainees in #Saidnaya prison in #Syria is still ongoing. The prison is very large and requires access to its plans and the method of opening the sections that are difficult to discover with complex underground floors.
