My dad abhors any negative comments about immigrants. Asked him recently why he’s so strong on it: ‘Because we’re always happy to take the rich and clever ones. Which means it’s not about disliking immigrants. It’s about disliking the poor and vulnerable. And that’s a bad human instinct.’
This is so disgusting.

So if Olivia is 32 now, broke up with Lizza last year, was together with him for a decade, and then was living with you for 4+ years before that, how old was she when you moved her out of her (presumably parents’) house in the suburbs to live with you?
Btw about this from Lizza's reply: Olivia and I lived together for 4+ years (4 b'days, 4 Xmases, 4 anniversaries). That's like $1250 of jewelry per celebration. And her apartment was a writing studio. And I made an f-ton then. What was I supposed to do? Get her a lot of Gift Certificates from Kmart?

Nothing like a proposal for a modest amount of lower-income housing nearby to find out who your neighbors are.

been thinking about this picture since yesterday. cannot get over how unhinged this is.
Housing is genocide sign seen at a NIMBY protest today against a mixed income high rise.

The new homes are less than a few blocks to a trolley stop.

And the neighborhood is majority white and middle to upper income.

YES! A related one for me: Organizing in small towns taught me in that you can’t write off ANY relationships, because everyone in your community is gonna stay part of your political sphere whether that’s your desire or not. So you have to consider the long term impacts of short term interactions.

There is no mass-deportation campaign going on right now. Deportation is a process.

This is kidnapping and human trafficking.

Seeing a massive divide online between Angelenos of all political stripes who understand that the protests in LA yesterday were mostly peaceful and any violence was ICE-initiated and East Coast establishment liberals lecturing “the left” on how riots just amplify right wing talking points.

It takes nerves of steel to do that, and world-class talent to know when to break it. This reminds me of Peter Ustinov's account of a "pause-off" between him and Laurence Olivier on SPARTACUS.

I'm not sure what "politically" means here. I don't think Democrats should make scolding Trump voters the core of their campaign or anything, I am merely a podcast host who is posting on the internet! I think morally blaming Trump voters is correct on the merits. That's it, that's the post.
What good does it do politically to point this out? On my own time, between my wife and I or whatever I might have similar sentiments, but what good does publicly shaming people do? I sincerely don't understand it. It feels insular and without purpose.

I have genuine sympathy for people who thought Trump was going to bring back their factory job or make IVF free because that's what he promised them and the media refused to say that he was lying.

But I'm sorry, you cannot vote for the "Haitians are eating cats" guy and plead ignorance.

This argument would work if Trump was suddenly doing something he never promised but mass deportations were the core of his campaign! Even in our desiccated media environment his voters absolutely knew immigrants were going to be ejected en masse.
i really, really need people to understand that they *didn't* vote for this, no matter how much you insist they did. insisting "they voted for this" elides the information environment that led them to vote the way they did in the first place, the thing that actually needs fixing.

A tale of two movies:

Similar deal structures. Similar budgets.

One made $45M from 3300 screens, post pandemic, and won the weekend.

The other made $41M from 3600 screens pre-pandemic, and placed second.

And yet this is the coverage.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.
