i should admit that at least 50% of the reason i’m pursuing academia is because i worked in customer service for a couple summers and realized i wasn’t tough enough for it. i maintain that gas station attendants are stronger people than most academics.

one of my pet peeves these days is the well meaning phrase, “this isn’t political, it’s moral.” i think people conflate “political” with “partisan.” politics is ultimately a struggle over moral questions — how to distribute resources and power to serve our idea of the common good.

this isn’t just about validating identities—it’s a real safety issue. having an ID with a birth-assigned sex that contrasts with one’s appearance automatically “outs” them, and given the vitriolic transphobia in our culture right now, that can put trans and gender nonconforming people in harms way.

ppl really don’t realize how many of their neighbors, peers, coworkers, etc depend on SNAP benefits bc it’s so stigmatized. my family was on SNAP for a few years growing up but no one around us knew. i want everyone to talk about SNAP as if someone in the room is on it, bc someone IS (or has been).
