Before you fall asleep poorly tonight, slow down to enjoy one of my cutest videos of Baby Bird Season 2025. It doesn't get much better than this 🥰 🪶
In this moment of anxiety, please enjoy a baby goose falling out of an adult gooses wing.

Yes I wrote that sentence.

Yes this happened.

Yes it's ADORABLE.

No I don't think I'll capture a cuter goose moment this year. 🐣 🪶

I'm not a Bernie-or-bust partisan but this year he's provided such a tireless voice in defense of democracy. IMO the strongest counter to the volatility of the moment would be to replace 99% of responses with this simple, matter of fact message distilled from years of experience.

A community consumed by joylessness within can't sustain life, even its own. We will win.
Jaw dropping murmuration of thousands of sanderlings tonight.

Our enemies are cowards who even at the peak of their power are bitter and joyless.

We are going to defeat them.

AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

Donald Trump’s war on climate science has staggering implications
Even a policy of “drill, baby, drill” would imply more climate research, not its evisceration, says Ralph Keeling

Regarding ongoing discussion of training students to evaluate sources of information -- it's heartening to see much serious attention by @eliothiggins.bsky.social and others. But I'm stumped why academics in particular are still so stumped by this!
I was teaching this to intro oceanography students 15 years ago with the part of my course that covered climate change. It could be incorporated into virtually any class, from primary school age through college. Very easy to do & probably the most valuable thing they will learn!

They accused it of teaching evolution, non-heroic US history, and anti-racism. They threatened its budget.
