When an old building is torn down in Tokyo, sometimes this reveals an even older building behind it.

Tokyo Tower was built in 1948. The old wooden house is probably also from around then — but it might be even older, since some blocks in this neighborhood were spared from the WWII fire bombings.

Happy Halloween from No-Face (顔無し) from Ghibli’s “Spirited Away.”

(Unfortunately, not everyone was familiar with the character— people asked me if I was “Nosferatu” or “the guy from Kiss who just died.”)

I was working a few nights ago so I missed seeing the Harvest Supermoon. But I enjoyed other people's pretty moon photos.

And I also got to enjoy this marked-down moon cake, which was 30% off at my supermarket.

When democracy is under threat, we can't sit on the sidelines. That's why I’m stepping up to run for City Council in my hometown of Providence. After a career electing leaders and winning campaigns on the issues that define our era, it’s time to get in the game.

I felt like refreshing my photo with something new, but I wanted to keep the same theme. Support is more important than ever, with LGBTQ rights under attack on so many fronts.

I thought my iPhone took pretty good photos, but…most of my images of last night’s blood moon/lunar eclipse look like eggs in the sky.

Publication day! This was one of the hardest stories I’ve ever translated, both for the language and content. It’s also one of the most important stories I’ve translated. I hope as many people as possible will read it and reflect on the reality of war.

I'm still making chopped tomato, cucumber and onion salads with lemon juice, salt and olive oil. The one pictured has fresh basil, too. I've made so many this year that my big Costco jug of olive oil finally ran dry.

There are plenty of legitimate criticisms aimed at LDP, but I also think that Keizo Takemi's defeat in the Tokyo district is a genuine loss. In a world of MAHA and other conspiracies, Takemi had a long track record of deep commitment to international public health.

Some of my Japanese friends have assured me I have no need to worry about anti-foreign sentiment here because I'm one of the "good ones." I obey laws, pay my taxes & don't cause any trouble.
But I they fail to grasp that any future anti-外国人 policies will apply to me & all the other "good ones," too.

The rising popularity of the new Sanseito party shows how many people buy into the idea that foreigners get "preferential treatment" in Japan.
I can think of only one "benefit" that I have, that Japanese people do NOT have.

I heard that couples were using the Shibuya “Scramble” intersection as background for their wedding photos.
I happened to see this today, on a live feed from that iconic Tokyo location.

I don’t know if they were real newlyweds or just cosplaying for fun, but….they were very cute!
