Our research have documented that dominance can lead to extreme destructive outcomes.

When dominance-oriented individuals feel they are stuck in the status hierarchy, a "need for chaos" is elicited: A desire for destruction in the hope that you will prevail in the resulting chaos.

Dominance is the attempt to gain status through intimidation or fear. It is in contrast to prestige-based strategies where people pay you respect in return for help.

Narcissistic individuals are drawn to dominance. When such individuals face status loss, they react with aggression.

When pundits argue that Trump will back down when he understands the destruction he is creating, they may be very wrong: Because it may be destruction and chaos that he seeks.

In his mind, this is what may be needed to "make America great again."

Pundits are - in vain - looking to economics and politics when trying to explain Trump's behavior.

But, in reality, the central place to look if we want to understand Trump and his policies is this:

The psychology of dominance.

Those trying to understand the tariffs as economic policy are dangerously naive.

No, the tariffs are a tool to collapse our democracy. A means to compel loyalty from every business that will need to petition Trump for relief.

the tesla protest might objectively be among the most successful in history already just in terms of immediate response, if you consider they forced the world’s most powerful person & its most wealthy to fully degrade themselves like used car salesmen on live TV while the whole world watched agog.

You probably saw yesterday that Ukraine agreed to the ceasefire arrangement proposed by the U.S. And you may have had a bit of the same reaction many did: Was Ukraine pressured into this by Trump’s coercive tactics? The answer is far more complex and interesting. My write-up in the replies.

If the US had continued to support Ukraine, we may have been months away from the end of the war. The Russians would not have been able to continue to fight for much longer. They were making almost no progress, taking huge casualties.
