For all the head engineers' bullshitting at a conference, it was never gonna work as a standalone podcast listening app that also had premium originals. It was *only* a machine to turn free users into paid users, with a smokescreen of "we just wanna make an easy-to-use podcast app for normies."

Well, to be fair, 99% of podcast apps don't build out a podcatcher and then use that as the "wow, doesn't this stink? You should pay us for the better version" value prop.
Free podcasts were being used as leverage to make the Luminary Originals look better in-app with their lack of ads.

Rural Kentucky, man. A lot of stereotypes about it are exaggerated/spiteful but there truly are some A Rose For Emily-ass people out there still with Victorian ghost hairstyles.
Some real "we call my grandmother "Mother" and nobody knows her actual legal name anymore" shit.
