I watch too much stuff and proceed to reference that stuff too much.

DNI: Bad Opinions
If the (horribly compressed) screenshots from the WB website are anything to go by, the new restorations have been improved from the overly dark ones.
So, comparing the two, I'd say these probably are just the original versions. Barring compression, the colours seem identical.

I’d say, with Rudish, I really enjoy those because they feel like their own thing. LTC tries to replicate an older era while Rudish tries to modernise it and stands out as its own thing.
I like LTC but it’s impossible not to compare it to Clampett and say “yeah, that’s more Ren and Stimpy”.

Exactly. Looney Tunes had a lot of slapstick but it was never painful (that was Tom and Jerry’s job.)
With how excessive the violence is, it takes away everything else that made those OG shorts great, like the subtle moments of character or moments where it’d simply slow down for a fun conversation.

It’s the perfect unhinged counterpart to the more sophisticated Rabbit of Seville.
Convict Concerto is another great one, putting a twist on the Hungarian Rhapsody set-up by having the piano be a part of the moving action, instead of just a setting for the characters to fight over.

Completely agree on both. Bob’s Porky and Alaskey’s Daffy is the post-Blanc dream team.
Love Jeff’s work too (especially his Bugs and Foghorn) with the exception of Elmer. More the writing’s fault than his but his interpretation is too aggressive and not as vulnerable as Bryan or West.

Honestly, I’ve seen little Woody overall (should really fix that) but I always fine myself coming back to Barber of Seville.
Completely insane and relentless, just as you’d hope a musical-themed Woody cartoon would be.

Oh yeah, I love that janky charm of Freleng's really early Bugs, it's just always funny looking back. Freleng is my favourite Bugs director so I'm always very forgiving on him.
Rhapsody in Rivets really deserved to win that Oscar, too. Heavily overlooked, like a lot of Freleng's 40s musical shorts.

Hiawatha has the benefit of still having plenty of great jokes, while Feather is just tired and generic.
The worst part of Hiawatha is how it suffers from the inconsistent designs Freleng’s animators had. Everybody seems to draw him different at the very beginning.

It's especially irritating when you have to wait several years.
I used to wait 1 year for 10 episodes of Always Sunny. Now I have to wait 2 years for 8.
The trade-off is that production value is definitely higher but sometimes you'd just rather have the simpler episodes of old.

(And yes, I did struggle choosing the games. First three were easy, then it was just whatever sprung to mind.)

2nd favourite movie, right behind The World’s End.
It’s not just the usual blending of animation with live-action either, everything about it’s great. The characters, the score, the story, it’s all about as perfect as possible.

There's a lot to love crammed in here (the way the manga's style transitions into the reboot's is a neat touch) but this is definitely my favourite shot.
Just from the expressions, you can gauge everybody's relationship with Lum, ranging from neutral friendship to casual hatred.

I'm hoping for 'Pappy's Puppy' at some point, whether in this volume or any future one.
I've always had a soft spot for it (slow start but great second half) and the fact it's never been restored makes it a prime candidate in my eyes.
But 'Ain't That Ducky' is vital for finishing off 1945 on disc.

Like all lemony things, 7 Up and Sprite are great but in moderation.
My teeth get all gritty if I drink too much at a time.

The whole score for this one is one of Stalling’s best, honestly.
A lot of varied and memorable motifs thrown in throughout.

Yep. Honestly the backwards voice is probably the only thing here that doesn’t creep me out, just because I know what it’s saying. Still a neat touch, though.

I watched Evolution earlier this year with my friend, who's a big Dragon Ball fan. I've never seen the show and even I could see how offensively awful it is to the series.
Later this month, I was gonna go through the original show, so maybe I'll rewatch Evolution after to see how my opinion worsens.

The violent music sting is what makes it so great. In general, that whole segment feels like one of the most Looney Tunes-esque in its humour.
November 2, 2025 at 8:39 PM
I’m pretty sure it was three. I’ve found ‘Ballot Box Bunny’ and ‘Show Biz Bugs’ equally great, honestly (maybe ‘Ballot’ is a little better because pianos are just funnier than xylophones) but ‘Rushing Roulette’ completely botches it.
There’s also the Animaniacs one. “Old gag, new twist.”

Between being a great director and one of Freleng's best animation (debatably even his best), Davis was a pretty talented person when you take a real look at him.
If only he DID get to direct more. But, then again, we wouldn't have gotten his great animation in stuff like Tweety's Circus if he had.
November 2, 2025 at 12:27 AM
Honestly, I'd say Davis was the most consistent in quality. Off the top of my head, there's not a single short of his I'd say is any less than good.
I'd probably pick 'What Makes Daffy Duck' or 'Bowery Bugs' myself, but I know there's a lot of people who'd go for 'Dough Ray Me-ow'.
