There's a standup routine where some guy explains the differences between all three and then wraps up with "the reason most people don't explain this is because it makes you sound like a pedophile" and that's the only time I ever thought it worked.

Out shopping earlier today, I was subjected to a song which consisted of the singer berating his sweetheart for refusing to put on an ugly Christmas sweater. To me, that would be grounds for an instant breakup—especially considering that it’s November 8th.

So…this is a new error message for me. Gotta say, I admire Windows’ nonchalance here—and its quiet optimism.

It’s really hard to find parking anywhere near Courthouse Square this afternoon.

First-world problem: when the e-book you'd like to purchase from the not-evil, non-giant-corporation outlet isn't available in DRM-free format, and is therefore locked into their proprietary reader instead of the one you want to use. (Which, admittedly, came from the evil giant corporation.)

I dunno what the hell I’m doing, but in theory this is gonna be dinner.

Our school mascot just randomly wandered through the library, glad-handing and waving at people. Truth be told, he's looking a little the worse for over-laundering—but it made a nice break anyway.

I'm having one of those weeks where it seems like everything is happening. Nothing really bad--in fact quite a bit of it is anywhere from kinda nice to really very good--but in aggregate, there is A Lot.

I checked out a 40-hour audiobook (Don Quixote) on Libby and ignored all my podcasts to try (in vain) to get through it before it expired. Now working on catching up; I’m listening to breaking news from a week ago. So of COURSE @tkingfisher.com‘s latest suddenly pops up in my queue. #LeSigh

Being a long-distance child of an aging parent can be tough. It’s hard to troubleshoot “my TV isn’t working” when it could mean an actual blown component, an unpaid cable bill, or an upside down battery in the remote controller.

For what it’s worth, the Hugos/Worldcon have a pretty decent record of learning from their mistakes and implementing guardrails against their reoccurring. But damned if they don’t keep hitting on NEW mistakes to learn from.
Something very very weird happened during the Hugos award ceremony... It's been on my mind for days, and so I wrote this blog: "When People Giggle at Your Name, or the 2025 Hugo Awards Incident"

I’m reviewing applications for an open position at work. One of the applicants has a name almost identical, but gender-swapped, to someone already working here. I’m tempted to support their hire just for the ensuing shenanigans.

Still visiting my mom, and getting oversaturated with broadcast TV. Seems like 94% of all advertisers are either window replacements, personal injury lawyers, or pharmaceuticals.

Whenever I visit my mom (every couple months) I end up throwing out food left over from my previous visit. Mom was born without a sense of smell, so some things bother her a lot less than maybe they should.

From this map, it's not entirely clear if my home town is located in New Jefset, Mtroinia, or Nontи Юarolina.
My goto is to ask LLMs how many states have R in their name. They always fail. GPT 5 included Indiana, Illinois, and Texas in its list. It then asked me if I wanted an alphabetical highlighted map. Sure, why not.

Sigh. I know nobody on *my* timeline needs to hear this, but there are apparently a lot of people out there who think NPR/PBS are about to shut down. They're not. CPB is shutting down, which is bad enough, but the networks are still going--not going strong--but going on. Spread the word!

Attn @titonka.bsky.social - any chance you might want to give this excellent explainer comic a boost?
#Tariffs are back in the news, so here is our free printable explainer #comic which covers:

- "What are tariffs?"
- "Why are tariffs going into effect now?"
- "What might happen when they do?"
- "Seriously?"
- "No, seriously?! This is some Mad King shit!"

Oh thank goodness. I was hoping someone would come up with something like this, to focus on stations in greatest need. Please promote, and consider donating!
A lot of people have been asking how to help public radio/TV weather this current storm. One of my concerns has been making sure the most vulnerable stations that serve small populations in rural areas get the support they need to keep going. This new site offers a roadmap. adoptastation.org
Adopt A Station - Rescue Public Media
Help preserve independent journalism and community programming across America by adopting a public media station. Congress has voted to rescind public media's funding.

There’s a guy On Here who’s prominent in a fairly niche industry, not someone I follow directly but often reposted by folks I do. His name is similar to someone else in n the same industry who badly hurt a friend of mine years ago. I frequently have to remind myself they’re not the same person.

I see a lot of authors on here posting their book birthday announcements but what I don’t see are the genre reveal parties.

Does anyone have experience with buying DRM-free ebooks from bookshop.org and loading/reading them on a ki**le device? I have my eye on several titles, and while I'm not interested in giving billionaires more of my money, I'm also fundamentally lazy and want to keep using my current e-reader.
