Hi, I'm the ProPublica reporter who's been tracking an unusual stat: U.S. citizens grabbed by immigration agents.

I did it because the government isn’t.

This is what I found.

The Texas appellate court said, “Recognizing that the right to differ is the centerpiece of our First Amendment freedoms, a government cannot mandate by fiat a feeling of unity in its citizens.” Since then, many have tried to mandate patriotism. I’m skeptical a court would rule this way today.

This didn’t get much attention, but in Illinois “‘press opining, reporting, or investigating matters of public concern is participating and communicating with the government’ and should be shielded from strategic lawsuits against public participation.” @chicago.suntimes.com

Satisfied subscriber here! I asked myself: Is it worth a few bucks every month to get something funny in the mail? Yes!
Some incredibly good news:

One year ago this week, The Onion returned to print.

In that one year, we’ve grown to the 13th largest print newspaper in the United States, just ahead of the Boston Globe, and growing fast.

In short, it’s working.

So… thank you. Thank you for helping save this thing.

It’s no surprise that targeting noncitizens for using freedom of speech and the press has a chilling effect on others who would exercise their First Amendment rights. Glad to see the Stanford Daily student newspaper taking the lead with support from @thefireorg.bsky.social
